My friend took his off with a sledge hammer, I'm assuming he was lucky he didn't damage the headers?
I've got a 95 F150 5.0l with two catalic converters, and heard I'd get a better sound if I took the muffler off, figured what the hell... Until I can afford to put a catback on it, this'll at least do something...
Gut your cat if you don't have to worry about inspections/emissions and can stand the smell of unclean exhaust. Leave the muffler it will be way louder with the cat mod
it quiets the motor more than you think. Or put a valve in before the cat and run a straight pipe on that, You can switch it back and forth from the cab if you see the police, shut the valve back to the stock exhaust. I wish someone told me to do this before I hacked mine off (removed cat $1700.00 fine) Jc whitney carries the valve
Bring it to a welder and have him cut the pipe and weld it in, No need to go to an exhaust shop who will try to sell you stuff you don't need!!
Don't gut the cat. Doing so is illegal in the US regardless of local emissions laws. What you decide to do with your trucks is fine so long as it doesn't affect other people. But are you aware of how many people suffer from allergies and asthma? Even in the countryside, air quality matters. Also, carbon monoxide poisoning does still happen regardless of where you live. Besides, if you have a stock muffler, gutting the cat isn't gonna do much. Yes, the cats do tone the noise down, but a factory muffler is the worst. Besides, better sound is all in the ears of the beholder. I like deep tones myself, but the raspy sound of a system with no cats and no muffler drives me nuts. I would never own such a vehicle. And if you go on long drives, you will regret the noise. It makes you drowsier than normal, and reduces your alertness. It also reduces the resale value, should you ever decide to sell it.
i dont want to get in a p**sing contest with bear river (again)... but i say ditch the cat, if no inspection great. if no inspection but authorities are still strict about stuff like that remove the cover from the cat and run your straight pipe through it... it still looks like you have a cat, just be sure to bolt/ tack weld it on good or the sound of it will drive you crazy vibrating!
Carbon monoxide is in all exhaust cats or not!! The pollution from passenger jets and industry is way more than what a car or truck makes, Not to mention the pollution that is created by the millions of cars that have problems and are not repaired dumping pollutants and not even aware of it!! If he wants to pay the ticket he will probably never see, Since DOT or a very astute sheriff will have to inspect the system and hava a tailpipe analyzer on hand, Plus they have more important things to worry about!! My vote is for the exhaust cutoff valve, that way you have the stock one or you can switch to the race exhaust for waking up the dead!!
I think you are confusing carbon monoxide with carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is in all exhaust systems cats or not, but I know for a fact that many converters remove very close to 100% of carbon monoxide.
The exhaust smell 100' away is a dead givaway of removed or gutted cats, your ticket or fine besides cost of replacing a destroyed cat.
With a quality high flow cats you would be hard pressed to detect the difference vs gutted cats, this I found out on a 5 speed vehicle that is also a 95 OB1. Now OEM, plugged up or rattling cats that can restrict flow you will see or feel a big difference going to high flows.
One of these days the governments going to get wise to so many people destroying cats they will add another strict inspection on all of us give 'em time.

even if a cop it sharp enough to pick up the smell of unclean exhaust they cant pull you over for it w/out a "stoppable" infraction. and even then most wont be able to check the cat, espescially if you leave the cover like i mentioned in my first post and they cant cite you there they have to refer you for a DOT special inspection and you can contest the referalls exactly the same as a normal ticket.

I hate getting behind dead cat cars. Just putrid. Have to shut the windows, then pass them. I had an '84 F150 that started to smell like a dead cat after about 150,000 miles.

And whats the point of going through all that just to have gutted cats?
because no matter what bear river claims, cats DO restrict airflow and affect the powercurve of engines. and dont try to tell me otherwise ive seen the dyno graphs to prove it.
