I have a 97 F-150 4x4 automatic transmission. I was driving about 65mph and then my truck just went into neutral, it was a very smooth transition no noises or breaking sounds just straight into neutral. and then when i pulled over it would not shift into any gear, it would only make the little jump when i put it in the reverse position but would not move when i pressed the gas.
I have never had any previous tranny problems slipping or anything.
I would just like to pinpoint the source of the problem and i hope that it is electrical so it could be an easy fix, but if not i am in Orlando and if anyone could recommend a good truthful transmission shop that would be appreciated.
No it did not hold when it was in park, I dont believe it could be any problems in the rear end because i checked the 4x4 for front wheel action and none there so i am pretty sure the source is somewhere in the the tranny. I have not yet been able to start testing the pump operation (How would i go about that?), I am not familiar with the transmission. so anything electrical or simple with the tranny I am confident i can fix but I will not touch the gears and all that, So i am trying to rule out everything first and then if necessary take it to a shop.
Also if anyone knows of a web site with labeled exploded views of parts (tranny in particular) could i have it. I had one before but have seemed to lose it over time.
thanks
Not holding in park rules out any electrical problem with the trans. Not holding in park tells me that the output shaft on the trans has stopped and there is no connection to the tires.
I believe those are the chain drive type borg warner transfer case, you could well have just popped the chain in there, a common weak link in those. If you put the trans in a gear and then try to shift back to park, does it have a sort of ratchety feel as park engages and make some clattery kind of noises, or a hefty clunk? If so, then your output shaft is most likely turning still on the trans and just not engaging in the transfer case anymore.
Ya Im am gonna check some things out on sat to get a better pinpoint on the symptoms, and give you guys an update. But Does anyone know where I could find a good site or somewhere I could find some exploded views with parts labeled for my Truck(97 4.6L automatic Trans. F-150).
I previously said that it still rolled in park, but I was wrong and park was still working properly..
Ok so I checked a few things out today then started my truck up an put it in gear and it drove, kinda weird. I only messed with the shift mechanism to make sure it was running through the gears properly and it was. I spoke with an old mechanic friend and he told me that he thinks that it is the Transmission Range Sensor, I was wondering about this sensor but in the books it makes it seem as it is only a safety to not start in gear, but he said it controls a lot more and that in a failure it can default to a neutral position. So I am gonna go with this and hopefully everything will be ok.
I replaced the sensor and it seems to shift fine but the transmission is making a loud whinning noise that just gets louder as i go faster, its doesn't sound good, any ideas on what could be the source of the noise. I haven't gone over 40mph cause i dont like the sound of it.
thanks
I would doublecheck that you have the sensor and linkage adjusted properly, check the fluid level, and maybe check the power steering fluid level too just in case you're hearing that pump whine. If that doesn't cure it, it's likely something's wrong inside, no way to really tell what without tearing it down to inspect. There's a whole book written on updates and upgrades for these trannies.
