I'm having a tough time finding the 5/16" X 24 machine screws for the door hinges - would prefer very stock, phillips head screws, but at this point, would settle for just about anything!
Does anyone know of a source for these? I've googled, checked my local hardware store (they have just about EVERYthing!!), and can't find them. Most of mine broke off in the backing plates, and I played heck getting them out, but now that they're out, need something to put back in! the backing plates are already buttoned in under the cab corner, so I can't make new ones, with a more-available thread. Drats!!
I got mine from John's Funhundreds, John's F-Fun Hundreds-Home. They're not identical, the tops are flat, not convex, but after looking all over I was happy to find them.
Bob - great, look good! I also found that some of the passenger cars, have 5/16X24 bolts, 30-50 or so.
I have both front cab corners installed - turned out great! However, on the one side, I got ahead of myself, and didn't put the backing plate in. I had to make that special "retainer", and just forgot - it wasn't fun fishing the welder in there, the flashlight, my hand to hold it, and getting it welded in...believe it or not, I surely remembered on the other side!!
I was pretty happy with the Northern Classic trucks patches, but one side was quite a bit off, at the bottom - it sticks out too far. It's all die-stamped, so it has to be in the die. It's not very much - 1/8"/3/32", but it's apparent to me - wouldn't be to anyone else!! I might try to fix it, might not - means moving the bend, about that distance. I would imagine, that it's every bit as good as when it came of the assembly line, though. Arrg!
Stainless is nice but I've been told it's not a good idea to screw stainless into mild steel. The stainless will gull, you have to use an anti-gulling thread sealant.
Bob - very true - any anti-seize compound will work, to limit galling, though. Rather a trade-off - no rust and shiney, or the galling. So many decisions...
Once I did a search on the antique car portions of the catalogs, there were quite a few more options. Not sure if I'll go stainless or not - I'm still a ways from that decision, just wanted to make sure they were available. I was surprised, that our local Ace didn't have them. They have one of the most extensive fastener selection I've EVER seen. Standard, metric, SS, polished SS, chrome...you name it. Even true lock nuts (the stamped, not the nylock type) in every size imaginable (up to 3/4"!!), but didn't have the 5/16X24...had 5/16X18, though.
I'm off Tuesday and Wednesdays - hope to get the filler pieces made Monday morning before work, and if I do, I should be ready for skim-coats of bondo by Wednesday!! The cab is getting closer!!
