MPG Challenge

Anyone here interested in a little contest to see who can get the most mileage out of their trucks? I thought it might be interesting to have a contest and see who can squeesze the most out. Your results would need to be calculated by hand by dividing gallons used by miles driven. When filling up, you have to let the pump stop on its own without adding more or not filling up completely. Anyone interested?

:-P My truck only gets like 12 mpg right now.. im thinking the -40 degress is affect it, and that I tend to leave the truck idling if im just running inside... which ive been doing alot... damn paperwork..

I think that means I loose :-P

12......... Holy crap! I hope this is city driving with a trailer hooked up. What year and everything is yours? HYW I'm getting closer to the 20 range on my 98. I'm not planning any trips soon but when I do I'll get an honest figure for the thread.

All my driving is city with a little highway, so I'll no doubt lose. Also my truck has never gotten more than 17 MPG, and lately it's been dipping down around 13. Next time I fill up I'll write down my mileage.

I've been down near 10 or so on the last tank, but that includes pulling people out of snow drifts and such. I think I got 19mpg on the last trip on the interstate though.

I live in fairbanks alaska, everything is within 20 miles.. and I mean EVERYTHING... out past 20 miles, your headed to anchorage, or canada, and those are about 400 miles away, so I havnt done that...

12 was after the one day when it was 40 below, and I had to run from one building to the next, so I left it idling.. no point running inside for 10-15 min, loose ALL my heat, and then run two block away to repeat.. id also prob have to plug her in, cause the battery doesnt like to push any amps after being parked in the cold.. time to get a new battery.. its 2 years onld and suposed to have 850 CCA... but im guessin too many starts in -40 have just pushed her to her limit

so its ALOT of idling.. lol

and I did pull 2 people out of snowbanks, and had to pull one car sideways... im not quiet sure how he got in that predicament, but with the trees it was the only option

id say she spends on average 1 to 2 hours of idling a day when she doesnt HAVE to be... im praying for warmer weather

It's been a fairly mild winter for me, and I use my 94 Ranger for a daily 20 mile one-way commute. (I know...this is the Explorer forum, but the Ranger has pretty much the exact same engine/tranny as my 92 Explorer). All at once, I went from about 18 to 14 mpg. I found the problem in the ECT sensor connector. There was corrosion there. With a higher resistance, the computer thought it was colder than it really was. (with an open resistance, the computer thinks it's minus 40). Other things you can check would be the ECT sensor itself, thermostat, and the diverter valve and heat riser off the exhaust manifold for condition and operation. (do second generation explorers have these?) I'm sure there's other stuff, but that's been my experience so far.

Well I know its not the thermostat, cause the truck does warm up to operating temps.. and ive seen vehicles with stuck open thermostats refusing to even get close to operating temps in this weather.. i dun know, ill check the ECT.. im pretty sure its just too cold out here, I get about 15 city when its above -15 or so, so I dun really think too much is wrong, no error codes, no lights at all (cept when its cold the abs light occasionaly comes on till I restart, and every now and then the airbag light will stay on for a few extra seconds after a cold start) She runs like a dream, so im not too worried bout it

SOHC 4.0: I've always averaged 20 mpg for six years and 110,000 miles. About 75% highway, even the city driving isn't stop and go. My secret? Walmart SuperTech synthetic motor oil....much cheaper than brand name oil. Changed every 10,000 miles.

I have a 97 MM with a 5.0L/302. Best highway MPG I have ever gotten was 18.5. I'm starting a 1200 mile round trip tomorrow so will keep track and report mileage when I return next week.

I don't trust wal-mart stuff in my truck. Also...10,000 miles?! Are you insane?
If it works, I guess that's great. But I don't let anything but Castrol pump through my 4.0, changed religiously every 3,000 miles.

"Are you insane?"

That's a bit harsh. I have a 94 4.0L OHV that has seen as much as 9,000 between changes (typically 5-6,000), and I have never used any type of synthetic.

I've towed with it, run highway and side roads, never had any problems. Is has some oil leaks, but nothing major.

Oh, and it currently has 263,000 miles (I put 210,000 on it myself)...

The gas mileage sucks, but I really have a hard time believing that the oil has anything to do with it.

Mike

nothing wrong with walmart oil or synthetic products, it is not like they make it.

i do not remember who does supply but it is a name brand manufacturer.

i will try to find it when i have a chance.
