I was getting 13-14 MPG in my 99 4.0 SOHC and put a K&N air filter in, my mileage increased to around 17MPG. I was pleased with that, but now I am back down to 13-14 again. I'm wondering how often these filters need to be cleaned, and if that may be the reason for the drop in mileage. All of my driving is mixed ( in-town/ highway).
I usually get around 12mpg when I do city and the stop and go commute with my 97 V8. On longer trips I seem to get 17 to 18mpg which is pretty good for a high mileage engine IMHO. I begin a nice long trip to TN shortly so I will track and post my results... going down will be just the Mountaineer and coming back we will have a 6'x12' Uhaul trailer along as well.
Just finished a 1060 mile drive in 97 MM 5.0L/302 with 104K on the clock.
Mileage Calcs:
308 mi - 18.019 mpg - all highway
208 mi - 18.648 mpg - all highway
139 mi - 13.976 mpg - about 1/2 miles was city driving
325 mi - 18.957 mpg - all highway
--------------------
1060 mi - 17.777 mpg average
I'll have to say that I get 13 city/18 highway just like I always have.
Take it as you will, but I just averaged 20.0 according to the computer in the '05 4.0L. that was mostly highway from CT to VT, but also 50 miles on VT backcountry roads (hilly and really bumpy)
Loaded, and not going slow (about 70-75 highway, 60 local roads)
Trip down to TN doing about 72mph and then about 80mph late in the trip. For the first two fill ups it came up at 18mpg and for the last one 16mpg (hills and higher speed is my guess)... the way back will be much lower (with a trailer).
I had a 97 Explorer, 4.0 SOHC and 3.55 gearing. I averaged 22-24 mpg highway doing 60-65 mph for a 200 mile trip. I now have a 05 Explorer with 4.6 and 3.73 gearing, averages 19-21 mpg highway doing same trip as above. Both trucks averages about 16-18 mpg around town.
Alright, here are the details on my last tank. The trip was strictly interstate with 6 miles in town to drop off a movie before leaving. I did approximately 73mph for the first hour of the trip before getting off the highway to buy some sunglasses. I followed a semi truck doing 65 for the next 100 miles or so until he got off the interstate. After that I did 70 for the rest of the trip home and filled up at the gas station. There was no wind which helped a LOT. I was pretty amazed that I got 25mpg and my truck's speedometer reads a little slow too, so I should be closer to 26mpg. I also had a full load of stuff to come home over spring break with. The truck has 179k on it with the original 4.0, 3.27s, t-case and tranny. The only things I have done to it are a Dynomax Super Turbo cat-back and e-fan conversion. Not too shabby.
I get about 20 MPG some times as high as 22 on the highway with my 93 4x4 with 4.0 auto. but a lot depends on how you drive. I drive my cars and trucks as if they have no brakes, that means staying way back of the car in front and costing down to a stop. when on curving rodes keep your speed so you dont need to use the brakes going in to a curve. and so on. I know it drives other peple crazy when they get behind me but I will go 5 MPH slower than the other traffic so They are passing me and not me passing them. besides saving a lot on gas I have never used up a set of brakes or a clutch. and on cross country trips like I do allot I average more miles in a day than most because when they need to pull in for gas I pass them again. I just got back from a 600 mile trip in My F150 and I got 21.8 MPG.

How did the electric fans help out? how much air do they flow (cfm)? did you have to upgrade anything on the vehicle first to do it? Any other tips woudl be appreciatted thinking about doing it to both vehicles.
I get about 17MPG on a regular basis, mostly city. I have reached 21MPG with a few more highway miles, though. Not too bad for a mid-size SUV, especially with the 3.73 rear-end.
