You know... some jobs SHOULD be as easy as they look! The gear broke off my bendix (292 motor). Bought a new bendix at Napa. It doesn't look exactally like the original (mine has a large coil spring at the bottom... the new one doesn't) so I take them both back to the store. The guy tells me it's the same but I'll have to use my old spring and somehow get it onto the new bendix. Of course, he doesn't know how to do it and there are no instructions. He looked it up on the computer and the PICTURE of the part looks just like mine... with the spring... but he swears I have the right part. I decided to go to another Napa store in a nearby town... got the same story. Furthermore, the bendix is locked and won't extend... the guy said there is something I'm supposed to trigger with a pencil or the like to release it. WHAT THE *%#@ are the people talking about? I just want to put a new bendix on my old starter!
Anybody know if all this is true, am I supposed to figure out how to modify a new part to fit my starter? How do I "unlock" this thing and get the spring on it?
I was going to add pictures of the two bendixs but my wife is out of town w/ the camera.
ANY HELP?
Desertwest, I concur with John . My last starter suffered a worn spring plate in the bendix assy and I replaced it, What a PITA. I figured it out but it only bought me about a years worth of service before the starter started to drag. When something goes wrong with a starter, they are usually on their way out. I replaced my repaired one with a rebuilt unit about three years ago and it still cranks like crazy. If you go this route, make sure the new/rebuilt starter is exactly like the old one in the nose area. The book says they will fit but I have had some trouble with the nose interferring with the flywheel a time or two. I even bought a rebuilt unit one time that had obviously been ground on to make it fit. Steve
Thanks for the help. I can't believe that a guy can't just walk into a parts store and get a bendix ready to go! I already have $40 in this thing. But it's prob best to just replace the whole thing now and know it's DONE!
Thanks!
