Hello,
Doing a little pre-work fact finding here to make sure I have all my stuff lined up before I tear into the truck. I am about to put a 3 spd overdrive tranny into a 6cyl 61 Uni. The tranny is out of a 54 eight cylinder truck. So, it has the 1 3/8 inch shaft and big splines. I understand that the clutch that came with the 6 cyl truck is smaller than the clutch that came with the 8 cyl truck. My question is will the splines still match up, or do I need to change to the larger clutch spec'd for the 8 cyl trucks. and if I do need to change it out, will it fit with the 6 cyl flywheel and bellhousing?
Thanks,
Jeff Moore
Jeff
Give me a call when you get a chance. There are a few questions I need to know to figure out which clutch you can use. The 1 3/8 was available in 10, 11, 12, and 13" diameters. Depending on your flywheel you are using and how it is drilled will determine which clutch you can us. Look to see how many pp bolt holes are in the flywheel. If it is a newer flywheel it is probably double drilled for 2 different size clutches. Let me know
Tom thanks for responding. It's nice to have some people in the business answer questions like that. The only info I could offer is 15 year old memories and hearsay from other people I know. BTW how much for a plastic vega clutch or should I just throw it away.

Reason: forgot stuff
the splines on a 6 and 8 are the same, only diameters are different on some , just retain your clutch, no need to change it, so using the trans isn't a problem, I'm running a overdrive from a 56 V8 in my 60 with a 223, bolted right in
