Bendix Fuel Pump

Hey any of you guys familiar with the old Bendix fuel pumps? Reason I ask is orich posted site that shows the new "facet" made ones. I have a Bendix I was using but was afraid it was messed up. It was nos I got from my dad who bought it back in the 60's for a backup he kept in the car. It pulses real fast to build up pressure then kind of ticks every few seconds even with engine not running. I am now thinking this is what it is supposed to do. It ran my engine fine I was just afraid it was going to leave me stranded. I bought a Mr. Gasket 12s and it hums all the time......I am definitely going to add a oil pressure cut off but would like to go back to the Bendix as it looks cooler and doesn't make that annoying hum.

Here is a link for one on Ebay kind of like mine. Mine is a single wire grounds on the mount.

I think I'am going to wire my pump like this once I get all the parts.

how to wire in a univerisal electric fuel pump - Bing Videos

I thought about the Mr gasket but it got mixed reviews and does not state if it is ethanol friend. Thanks to orich I'am going to go with the facet brand, napa sells them. Look at my - fuel pump again - thread for a link. I believe the Mr gasket pump is piston operated and that's why it makes noise. I will add some more info as do more research.

All my mechanical fuel pumps that have failed have been airtex so not really a fan right now.

For the money I think facet is the way to go but that's up to you. Carter, Delphi get good reviews but a little more money.

Please post what you find out, I want to get switched out this coming weekend if possible. Check back later, got to go finish putting my truck back together.

Did some research on bendix fuel pumps, couldn't find much other than they where made for aircrafts and porsche's. Facet are also, they are good for all types of gas and diesel. If you go to there web site they have a pump that looks similar to yours and is also a one wire hook up. They look like a good quality product.

I e-mailed facet and asked for recommendations that would work with my 390 fe engine. If your interested I will post what I find out.

I was mainly wanting to know if it was a continuous pulse type pump or if it actually shuts off after fuel pressure is reached. I do know these were popular on drag cars back in the 60's and early 70's.

Okay that's the way the Bendix and most electric fuel pumps work.
It starts out with fast pumping then slows with a few clicks now & then to maintain the pressure. When this type of pump fail it continues to pulsing at a fast rate trying to push fuel.

Some pumps have a motor that you hear continuously, yes they become a annoying after a while if you don't have a loud exh. system..

If you never leave town with your truck you could always have it towed home. But if you were out on a camping trip and your electric pump failed then your stuck, what a bad feeling that is!

This is why, I run a backup up E-pump! It's like a 2 way street versus a one way in & walking or tow out.. Just sayin!

I agree. 100% on being stuck. I did get a response from their web site.

Hi Randall
Thank you for your email. This old Bendix fuel pump is our current Facet GOLD-FLO fuel pump. Bendix was the owner of our company many years ago. If you are looking for the spec of this pump, please notice on the mounting bracket some stamped numbers on each side of the bolt hole for example 476 087. The current Facet number will be the same except we add a (E) which stands for electronic. You can then check the part number on our website.
I believe these old pumps were designed to slow down when they reached pressure which seems the case for you however a pump made in the 60’s should be placed on a shelf and not on your pickup, I hate to hear that you got stuck some place due to this old pump.

I have to take timing cover off due to oil leak. I found cam pin on old timing set and it is 1/4 " longer so I can put eccentric back on. I can always mount a switch to turn pump on to fill carb bowl. I dunno if I will put manual back on or not. Might just carry Bendix pump around with me just in case.

Why not just mount it & forget until it's needed if the manual pump poops out on ya.. Then just a flick of the switch and your on your way.

Carrying it around with you is like having a spare tire without any air in it.
Then pump up the tire when it's needed

Or did, I misunderstand what you mean by carrying it around?

Some of these question may seen stupid but I'am going to ask anyway. So orich your e - pump is a flow thur design and is in series with the mechanical pump. E - pump is off unless the mechanical goes out and then bingo hit toggle and e - pump takes over and your on your way. You can then replace the mechanical and turn off e - pump unless needed again.

Facet from Aircraft Spruce

This what the facet rep. suggested for my 390 fe engine.

Facet# NAPA#

60302 610-2006 POSI-FLO

40289 610-2002 CUBE

FEP735 610-1085 FUEL FILTER

Impressed by the rep., quick response in less than 24 hours. I asked about a regulator and he said they where self regulating and did not need one.

Please note the down side of running a push e-pump. If for some reason if a manual fuel pump happens to fail, you should check that the diaphragm is not damaged in a way where it is "forcing gas into the crankcase".

You could run the backup E-pump a couple of minutes at say curb-side idling then shut off the motor check and smell the oil for any sign of gas before driving on any farther.

If it's going into the crankcase then you'll need to bypass the manual pump with a foot long extra gas line should do it & maybe a extra fitting & or clamp. This is something you can figure out before hand and having the necessary fittings or hose needed then put in a zip lock bag in glove box or under the seat a long with needed hand tools if you don't keep any tools in your truck.
