I have searched over 500 posts with no luck on this one. I know I can buy a new starter for $100, but that is no longer the point.
How do you get the Bendix/drive gear set to the disengaged position on a starter????
Here is the deal. '64 with 292. Starter dragging. Took starter out. Bearings worn. Took starter off parts truck with low miles. Bench tested fine. Polished all terminals. Tested using new solonoid and truck's wiring, but not attached to the bell housing...the starter purrs like a kitten. Install starter in bell housing, and the solonoid clicks, but starter will not turn, nor will it turn engine. Engine turns easily by hand.
Does the bendix need to be in the disengaged position upon install? Shop manual doesn't mention this, but it is the only thing we can come up with. We have torn the bad starter apart looking for answers.
