02 EXPY Hard Shift at around 45 MPH

02 EXPY Hard Shift at around 45 MPH

Recently our EXPY started to shift hard as we accelerate. It sounds like a clunk, but appears to go into gear. Mileage is at 48K and had tranny fuild/filter changed about 5k ago.

Any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting?

Not an expert, but had similar problems on my 03EB, intermittent but very disconcerting. Same time, the anti-lock brakes started acting up (engaged prematurely). Took it to dealer -- said it threw no codes and they could not diagnose. Did a little research and took a chance on the transmission speed sensor. About a $20 part on-line and about a 5 min install. Problem fixed. Good luck, my 03 has all kinds of electrical gremlins.

Which Sensor was it. The output shaft speed sensor (OSS) or the Turbine Shaft Sensor (tss) Just curious. My expedition is having similar problems.

On my 03 it was called a speed sensor. It is located on the driver side of the transmission. The 98 models may have a different configuration, I think they have a sensor in the rear diff that the 03's don't have.
