Looking at 01 Expy

Hi Guys,

My wife and I are looking at an 01 expedition. Is there anything that I should look out for? It has 89K on it, mostly hwy miles. Any thoughts.

Thanks,

Scott

We bought an 01 about 2 years ago with 40k and put on another 40k so we are at 80k now, no troubles at all. I did much research and the 01 seemed to be a good year when many bugs were worked out. I prefer the 5.4 v8 over the 4.6 and mine is a EB 4x4 my real mileage is 12 mpg winter ( remote start and 4x4 use and gas blend is different in Buffalo NY wintertime) 14 summer time with about 65% city driving and 35% highway. We new mileage would be about that but our Explorer we traded in really only got about 16 mpg. Look for rust at inside bottom seams of doors and tailgate they had moisture in the sealer that causes rust, could be a good bargining point to get it cheaper they is a TSB bulletin on it and search this forum for more details. If there are strange electrical problems in the rain the windshield could have a leak and water gets in the GEM module. If it has the limited slip rear they can chatter on turns but a fluid change usually fixes that, also if an ocasional rumble like driving over rumble strips it could use a transmission fluid change. Over all I belive the 01 to be a good year usually right in the middle of a models lfe theygot things working well, in the beginning it takes time to get it right and at the end they use up parts they may have not passed all their quality standards because hey its the end of the run for this model.

I bought my 01' about 2 years ago and have had only 1 major problem with her. The parking brakes locked/seized up and while I was in there fixing it I noticed one of my rear axle seals leaking. I was able to replace the parts myself. That's about it. It had 69000 mile went we bought her and now shes only 200 miles from turning 100000 miles old . I replaced all the drivetrain fluids and the DPFE Sensor (it threw a code). I also replaced the spark plugs when i got her. She has been problem free since. I hope yours has a 5.4l engine. I feel the 4.6l is severly underpowered. Expecially if you are going to tow with it. It's hard enough to get this tank moving as it is. Good luck. Chris

I bought a used 2001 EB about three months ago -- 77,000 miles -- all records and from original owner -- I have had no problems -- I bought primarily on condition -- Mine is an EB 2WD with the 4.6 -- gas mileage is marginal even with small engine and no 4WD --- Pickup is OK -- unless you want to stay with every car at every stoplight --- I have towed my 5000 lb boat and trailer with no real issues -- but it is FLAT here in Florida -- since mine will only see low annual miles the size engine was not a big issue -- condition is ----average mileage has been 12-13 around town and about 16 on highway for the only long trip --

I would say the 5.4 would be preferred -- but costs a mile per gallon -- and the 4x4 would cost another mile a gallon --- if you need them GET THEM.

I do like the Expedition -- and no real issues -- all the email on here with problems can scare people -- but I think it wise to remember that the majority do not post --- and a person with no problem does not post
( my opinion) so these type of boards can distort the viewpoint --

Overall a decent vehicle -- and I see no issues with a well maintained 2001.

my 2 cents -- thx Dale -- West Palm Beach FL

Well we bought it last night, everything checked out good. There was rust starting on the inside of the door, that saved me a few hundred bucks. It is a one owner with 89k highway. The interior doesn't evern look like it has been sat in. It's a 5.4l, 4X4. I got it for $10600, I thought that was a good deal for a load Expy. I'm sure that I will be asking more questions in the months to come.

That sounds like a good deal, you got alot of truck for $10600 and the miles are no big deal. With regular maintance you should easily get another 80K + from it. I live in Buffalo NY and Christmas EVE 2004 was a huge snowstorm probably 16" to 24" of snow fell in about 8 hours The 4x4 was unbelivable the truck is excellent in adverse conditions. I have been driving 4x4's for about 26 years. My Mom and Dad had Christmas EVE at their place and it is a great piece of mind to know I can get there no matter what, they are in their 70's and it is important to me to be there for them. You may only " really" need 4x4 posibably a couple of times a winter but getting to or helping my parents is my main reason for having it. Its also handy for launching boats or pulling out small trees, shurbs, or sometimes at big events or places and you need to park on grass it comes in handy. The 5.4 is a good choice if in hilly areas, my wife test drove a 4.6 and up bridges and hills it was louder and shifted more she really liked the 5.4 better and I agreeded.
