I'm thinking about installing a shift kit not b&m im going with transgo from the things i heard on here but i was wondering is it rough on a older transmission there is currently nothing wrong with it i was wondering does it help or hender a transmission I have a 1987 f 150 5.0L 3spd c6
Shift kits are actualy good for a trans in the sense that shift transition are much quicker/firmer so there is less slipage and less heat. Doing the 1-2 tire chirp at WOT is pretty cool too.
i thought about a shift kit, but a whole valve body done all up with a shift kit etc for a c6 from tci was only like a 120 dollars so i opted for that, works great
If your tranny is in great shape no problem. If it is getting old, then it depends on what is worn. The kit will help decrease the amount of slippage between gears, that's good, but it also makes the shift harsher, that's bad. So It depends on how harsh the shift is and what is worn.
If you go for say a "full race" shift, really firm, it does put a lot more stress on the drive train. If you just get a nice clean shift such as for RV towing, then unless your tranny is dying, you should be OK.
You want less slippage between gears, you don't really want a chirp.
If you drive normal, you will most likely be fine. If it blows, the tranny was probably already on it's way out anyway. You can blow a stock tranny just fine if you abuse it, so it depends...
When you drop the pan to install, inspect things and look for particles and fluid color smell. That may tell you a lot about the current condition of your tranny.
