Fix the HD ruise-O-Matic or swap in a C6?
Hello,
I have a '66 F100/352/HD COM. I have lost 1st and R gears. It's probably the rear servo. I also have a C6 from an early '70s truck. I searched this forum and didn't even find a post with C6 in it. Maybe, this is not a good swap?
Any one done this swap?
Thanks!

You are right I searched c6 and also came up with 0. I tried c4 and got some response. I also did an advanced search for tranny in the 61-66 forum and found tons of information.
I had a 68 ford with a 390 and a C6 that was factory stock. The 390 and 352 have the same block so I can't see any problem finding parts to make the switch to a c6. You will probably have to move the cross member and you may even have to modify the drive line but it should bolt to the engine. The c6 in my 68 was bullit proof. I hauled a fith wheel all over CA and never had a problem. I would say go for it.

LOL, JD, I work in Modesto! I am an engineer working fro RFMacDonald co. Our office is near Home Depot.
I should rop the pan and see if it is something easy. I remeber that the original rear servo was cracked and the replacement I found was a little smaller. I hope its easy. TCI shows the C6 application starting in 1966.
I will look over the C6 and see If I can identfy the application.

Small world.
I have delt with RF McDonald in the past. I think our Fresno plant still does. I am currently using McNulty Mechanical.
I am the maintenance Manager for CDI Turlock. We are getting ready to install our second Alzeta burner at my plant. I hope it turns out as well as our first.
Good luck

Mcnulty is a great company. Mike was involved, working for me when I was at tri Valley Growers, on one of the first PLCs ever applied to a package boiler. They have a good reptation and loyal customers like yourself.
The Alzeta burner has pluses and minus like any of the others. The plus side is that it is simple and works. The down side is those air filters, low combustion efficiency, and the life of the burner element. We installed a few ourselves. Meeting 9-15 PPM NOx is no easy matter!

Eric, A C6 with the round top FE bell, will bolt up to your engine. You will have to use a different driveshaft, speedo cable, and the column shift pattern is different. C-O-Ms can be rebuilt in my area for $600-700.00
If a power steering/disc brake upgrade is in your near future, I might suggest buying a 73-76 F100 with a 360/C6 combo and move your sheetmetal over to it.

RT, I have done this exact swap and am really happy with the results. 2 things you need to be aware of though. 1) you need to find a C6 that has a fixed output flange(as opposed to a slip yoke) 2) you will need to shorten the intermediate driveshaft about 2 1/4"(this is an estimate, stand the 2 trannies on the bellhousing and measure the differance in length at the output flange). The rest is cake. You will need to have a tranny cooler if you're still running the original intercooler at the tranny, that goes away with the COM.

Guys,
Looks like the HDCOM doesn't want to part company with the truck! What happened is the valve body spool came away from the shifter. In other words, it wasn't moving. It apparently popped of when I put the truck in park. I have it fixed now with the valve body moved closer to the shifter.
By the way, my manual says to rotate the sppol, in each gear, to make sure there is no binding with the shifter.
Looks like my C6 will have to wait for another day.
i am curiuos about the tranny cooler. My radiator has a cooler in it. Did the original HDCOM not use this type of cooler?

Rt, my '65 F250 had a water to oil intercooler mounted on the tranny. Engine coolant was plumbed back to this intercooler and tranny fluid was plumbed through it. That was the factory setup. Now I cannot say that there were any other tranny cooling options but that was how mine was done. I'd guess a PO had done the swap to what you have today.
