I have read alot of comments as to the E40D being useful ONLY as a fishing weight.

I have on in my 91 F250 7.3. I had a shift kit put in it as well as a complete OH, when it was put back together, I am using Amsoil Synthetic Tranny Oil, and the Transmission feels very strong and smooth.

Should I put a Transmission cooler on this truck???? Would it help as to the dependability?????

What should I watch out for as to problems???????

The biggest problems are the Torque convertors shelling out internally and the early weak point of breaking the aluminum carrier from dropping straight from reverse to drive without stopping. Other than those two points, it's not much worse than any other auto, and much better than most of the bowtie paperweights. A cooler tranny will last much longer. A custom chip that keeps the t/c from burning up is really a good idea. They don't like to be hot-rodded at all in factory form. Bigger tires will usually burn them up much faster, mostly because they shift too early and don't sense the load correctly burnining up the t/c and clutches. And for all intents and purposes, when they hit 100K miles they are usually itching to blow up.

I do not hot rod the truck (240K) and do not have monster tires on it. What brand of cooler / size of cooler would you recommend, Hayden??? Largest possible??????? Truck has a new TC in it.

1;Heat is what kills them,so put the biggest cooler you can fin on it.2;Keeping the filp adjusted will help it also.3;Install a temp guage so you will know how hot it actually is.Up hill in reverse,with your trailer on generates lot of heat,fast.4;Change the fluid about every 3rd oil change.5;Install a inline tranny filter in the line.All that being said,it should be pretty trouble free.

 

Jasper makes a trans cooler kit that includes oversized lines and inlet/outlet fittings. They claim that the stock lines restrict the fluid flow to the cooler so much that even the largest cooler would not be effective. I have installed the kit on about half a dozen trucks and highly recomend it.

 

Some people like the Banks TransCommand. Others have said that it tends to kill tranny's. I would call around to some of the bigger tranny places and ask what they liked. Maybe TCI or B&M.

 

After pulling hard I backed up and shelled the tranny right in the street in front of my house.as I was backing into parking spot..
When AAMCO rebuild it the man in charge, I had worked with for 11 years and he explained to me that the tranny was made with only a small bleed hole in it when in reverse and the line pressue would go out of site when tranny is hot and you go to back up loaded...in forward gears they are pressure controled but not reverse.
They drilled out bleed hole a few thousands and on the overdrive part it only comes from the factory with 2 overdrive gears in it... and they are little.. they kited it with 4 overdrive gears and said thats a lot stronger, when you see how little those overdrive gears are it makes you wonder how they can pull anything....

 

just a little trick if it is a 4x4 and im backing with a big trailer or heavy load ill drop it in low range no slipping or overhaeting the tranny that way i have manual hubs too so i dont have to worry about the front tires binding up either

 

hello y'all so I have a 1991 F250 with 1.3 mil. Miles running that transmission with a cooler and haul a 41 foot fifth wheel trailer. I have never had any issues with the tranny overheating as of yet. I am currently in the process of taking the 7.3 Navistar out and figured I would rebuild it for another million ohhl and I'm making it a dually. I can't believe this thing has a 140 amp alternator
