is it possible to remove lock cylinder without key
I have a very nice original ignition switch without the key. I tried to twist off the shiny chrome bezel piece but it won't turn beyond a certain point. I suspect that the lock cylinder must be removed first. I know how to remove them with a key and paper clip, BUT, is there any way to remove the lock cylinder w/o the key and without destroying the ignition switch? By the time I go to a locksmith I could probably buy a new aftermarket switch. This one is genuine Motorcraft.
Let me clarify, I am not opposed to destroying the lock cylinder but would like to save the ignition switch.
My best guess would be drilling out the lock cylinder... have you tried many keys in it? They are pretty simple, with I think 4 or 5 tumblers, I took one apart yrs ago to re-key it to match the door keys I had, the keys and the lock were very worn, so I didn't have to get it exact. But... if that no worky, I would take a drill bit, slightly larger than the key way and drill it out, then you should be able to get the tumblers out, then the paperclip trick.
I agree, I don't think you can get it out without the key. Definitely worth trying some other keys though. I ended up drilling my original one out as I lost the key...and then I found the key...

I was able to do it with a key that fits into the lock and jiggleing it. Takes some patience and a little time but i did get it out. They also sell sets called jiggle keys.
I refenced a video similar to this one when I had to get mine out without a key. It took a little bit but in the end, it wasn't that bad. I made my own tools. Once you get the cylinder to turn, then you can follow the standard instructions to remove an ignition cylinder in these trucks. I don't recall he exact sequence using the little hole in front and turning but there was no need to drill mine out. I was surprised that I was able to do it but like I said, it wasn't that hard. Good luck.
