Hello, I believe I have a transmission issue but please keep in mind this truck has been sitting and I don't get much time to drive it. I drove it for about an hour to pick up some stuff and on the way home to my surprise while sitting at a stop light it dumped into gear and started spinning the rear wheels like it was race day. Thankfully I have good brakes on it! Anyway I slammed it into park then back into drive and it was fine all the way home but now I'm leery. I'm figuring start with replacing the fluid and filter but know nothing about transmissions.
I was just sitting there at idle, technically in gear (drive) and gave it no gas at all but it had other ideas and started laying down the hammer. It took a second to figure it out and I'm glad there was nobody in front of me but it's never occurred before. I ordered a code diag to try and see what is going on because it's close to mulch season here (the truck's primary job) but just wondered if anyone else had encountered such an experience? The 4.6 does have 170K on it but I've done regular maintenance, it doe sit a while in between uses but I drive it work maybe once every 2 weeks for battery and all that.

The transmission cannot cause that to happen. The engine and/or the engine control system can do that.
The place to start is to read the codes. The places that read codes free CANNOT read all of the codes. I recommend getting Forscan at www.forscan.org. Another alternative is to go to a good independent shop, or a Ford dealer to get the codes read.
Next time try turning key off, or you may take out your trans, drive shaft, rear end, all at once, sounds like you drive by wire throttlebody/gas pedal, lost where it was at.
