6.0 5r110w Front Pump Question
My trans body is early years, the part number on the front of the remanned pump is the same as my old one. Am I missing something important, or is it just a tight fit?
I can tear it apart and put a band on it if necassary, and maybe my brain just isn't understanding it. This is the first transmission I've been inside in 20 years, and the rest were 722.6 MB transmissions.
Any help would be appreciated.
AI OverviewNo, not all 5R110W transmission pumps are the same
. While the pump-body castings are generally similar, the pump cover differs between model years, with a specific redesign occurring after 2005 to improve pressure regulation. Using the correct pump version is critical for proper operation.
Key Differences and Compatibility
- Generation 1 vs. 2: The Gen. 1 pump (2003–2004) was redesigned for 2005-later models to address low-pressure issues, featuring a modified main pressure regulator valve and a stronger pump cover.
- Interchangeability: Generally, pumps from 2006-up are considered a separate group from pre-2005 units, though the complete pump assembly may work in either case if matched correctly.
- Non-Bypass Design: Some 5R110W pump covers have a "non-bypass" design, featuring a notch in the worm track for constant oil flow, which differs from earlier models.
- PTO Provision: The pump must match the transmission's PTO (Power Take-Off) capability, as this affects the internal components.

I got the Trans-Go centering sleeve with pins and I got a cheap (20 ish bucks) outer strap. Loosened and re-torqued the bolts on the front pump, and it slid in like I expected oringinally. I suspect when it was re-manned it was just pulled apart and cleaned. Anyway, it's slid in, and now I'm on to rebuilding and installing the valvebody.
Next question that comes to mind is. Since I didn't soak all the friction disc's and the pump with fluid, should I flip it on it's back and soak them in the case while I install the valve body or is it that important?
I was thinking about just cranking it over a lot before I start it.
