I'm trying to troubleshoot my daughter's 2009 Escape Hybrid's AC system. It works well until it gets 80 degrees + plus outside and then it will turn off. Me and a local garage have both checked refrigerant level and it is where it should be. I know basics of AC but this has me stumped and I don't know what to else to check. Any suggestions?
Need to have a bit more information.
When you say it "turns off", do you mean the fan stops or does the fan keep blowing but the compressor clutch won't engage?
Is the engine at normal operating temperature when this happens and not running hot?
When the shop checked refrigerant level was the A/C running and putting out cold air and did they check both high and low side pressures?
"When you say it "turns off", do you mean the fan stops or does the fan keep blowing but the compressor clutch won't engage?" fan stays on but the compressor clutch disengages
"Is the engine at normal operating temperature when this happens and not running hot?"
normal temp
"When the shop checked refrigerant level was the A/C running and putting out cold air and did they check both high and low side pressures?"
yes he tested both
First thing I'd do is check for an excessive compressor clutch gap. If the gap is excessive, the clutch can drop out when the coil gets above a certain temp as the electromagnetic force weakens, and the clutch won't engage again until the system cools back down.
If the gap is okay, a scan tool will likely be needed to see if the PCM is commanding the clutch off for some reason.
