Anybody painted their tires?

Yep, anybody painted their tires? My sister painted her tires lime green back in the 60s on her vw bug. Farmers used to do that on their equipment claiming that the paint protected the tire and made it last three times as long. So, I slung a new set of Armstrong tires on my F250 and when I inspected my spare (which was 10yo and never run) I discovered sidewall cracks in several places so I just replaced it with a new tire. I wonder if a good oil based paint on that spare tire would protect it from dry rot and sidewall damage from hanging under the bed.

Short answer, no- the tire compounds are all synthetic today and the reason for the "cracking" is much different than back in the old days with the farmers

So what causes the cracking? Oxidation? UV rays? Whatever is causing it has to be the result of direct exposure to something.

The tire shops call the sidewall cracks "ozone cracking".

I just replaced all 4 tires on a 07 Ford Crown Vic with 21k I just bought that 11-year-old tires and dry cracking in the tread but looked new.
Even the shop came out to tell me they looked good (tread wise) till I told them to check the DOT date and the tread for cracking.

They say tires should be replaced every 5 years because of age, not wear.
Ozone is what hurts tires that dont get hit with UV rays like a spare under the truck.
As for painting tires back in the 60's people were smoking and taking funny things and thought doing that was good.
I would not put anything on tires that was not made for them like tire shine.

The spare on my pickup is from 1985 and when I checked it it looked great but it is mostly for looks to complete the look of a 81 F100 like the jack, handle and lug wrench under the hood, jack dose not work
If you plan on using that spare tire I would replace it other wise it is just for looks like mine.

10 years is what most tire places use. If you take a tire to a shop that is over 10 years old, they will most likely refuse to repair it or install it on a vehicle.

Hard to believe but it's very much true that tires have an expiration date and should not be used regardless of how they look. Not my rules, just something I learned over the last 30 years.

Tire company propaganda? Perhaps, I have no earthly idea but I do know that chemicals breakdown over time. Tires are chock full of chems.

I've heard6 years for replacement. A tire shop I used in Virginia, mentioned that the manufacturers were not using as much oil in the tires as was done in the past.
Also , supposedly, "tire shine" type of products shouldn't be used because they have a tendency to dry out the tire.

There is almost certainly a time limit for tires. Both 5 and 15 years would be crazy standards...somewhere in that range, however.

I suspect anyone who is 100% sure their standard is the one-and-only has just drunk someone's coolaide.

I further suspect high air temperature and full sun exposure shorten the life of a tire. A fabric cover for a spare tire which is exposed to sun makes sense to me. So.....maybe painting??

I think pure silicone is probably the best thing to put on tire sidewalls. Dont forget to do the inside also.
