Say, has anyone ever painted the sidewall of a tire to create a wide whitewall? I want a modern performance tire but with the wide white look. Any ideas or opionions?
Clayton ! If you paint the tires it won't last, they will just crack. There are several companys that make as you say performance tires. One of the largest is Coker Tire 1-800-251-6336 they are located in chattanooga,Tn. They sell bias-ply and radial wide whitewall tires for nostalgia street rods. All sizes. There web site is www.coker.com
They have name brands like Firestone,B.F.Googrich,Michelin and etc. Or pickup a Hemmings Motor News they have a lot of tire companys in there that sell wide whitewall tires. www.hemmings.com If you need more info let me know. Later !
Clayton,
I agree. Painting the sidewalls will only result in cracking later, plus it'd look tacky. Check out Coker Tire or similar. A friend of mine is restoring a '56 Chevy Bel-Air and, if I remember correctly, he found modern radials by BF Goodrich that are wide whitewalls. I think Coker's tread life is not so good. BF Goodrich and Michelin merged some time ago, so BFG's technology is better than days of old as well...
I've looked throughout Cokers site and the thing I don't like about it is the price, I don't really have the cash for $150 tires. Never thought about the cracks. Well thanks anyways.
Yep ! They want a arm and a leg. But all tire companys do. You could try portawalls. There make your tires have wide whitewalls. People use to us them. But dont take my word and use them.Ask any old truckers about them. They were around on old cars for years. Seems like I have seen them in Hemmings Motor News lately.
I got the coker classics, with a wide white on my 55. They look great, and wear great. Definitely worth the $150 each. Hmmm, the little lady must have been away when I purchased these things come to think of it. "six hundred and fifty dollars for tires?!"
