So, I'm working on a 4R75E in an Expedition. Needs a solenoid. I know that much. I ordered a new one, but I used the wrong part number. Ended up with the older pre-2005 version with a different connector when I needed the newer style.
I'm going to pick it up from NAPA tomorrow.
while I have the pan off, I want to go ahead and test the other solenoids since they're easy to get to.
What's the test procedure? I have bench power supplies, scopes, multimeters, etc. I haven't done much work on automatic transmissions (luckily) and I'd rather not miss something and have to do this again. Wasn't very fun to work on.
Why do you think it needs a shift solenoid? Maybe it does, but I have built 100's of them and never seen a bad shift solenoid. What year is it?
'05 with 250K miles on it. Delay shifting into first from neutral or second, zero other symptoms. Fluid is fine, not low, smells fine, pulled the pan and there was some metallic "sludge" on the magnet, but not very much and not enough for me to be concerned with. I'm guessing it's been 150K miles or more since its been serviced. I'm swapping the filter along with the solenoid.
The solenoid is supposed to be here tomorrow, so I'll pick that up and install it tomorrow afternoon. I'll update the thread after a test drive.
Aren’t failed accumulators far more common on these?
No clue. I was told to replace the shift solenoid, so I did. Didn't seem to make much of a difference.
I'm buying a replacement vehicle in a few weeks, so I'll just drop the transmission and rebuild it or replace it. Never have had the opportunity to rebuild one and it'd be a good vehicle to learn on since I have some other AODE type transmissions in some of the other vehicles.

I think it is a problem with the forward clutch. It could be a leaking seal, burnt frictions, etc.
10-4. Whenever I get around to tearing down the transmission, I'll try to remember to update this thread with pictures of whatever it turns out to be. Might help someone else in the future.
Very common for the forward clutches to just wear out, excessive clearance and then it cuts the outer lip seal. Also common to crack the forward drum at th esnap ring groove. Both would cause your issue.
