I'd recommend Redline.

I second that. Considerably reduced gear rollover as well as most of the grinding going into gear when cold I had.

Thanks. No doubt redline is good but $$$. More than mobil 1… Amalie is almost the price of conventional.

We just got a bunch of cases of this in recently when I ordered atf for the Humvees. No idea if it's good or not but they usually don't put garbage in the system as far as fluids.

I'm interested to see where this goes.

I ran Amsoil, Redline MTL and now am on Redline High Temp ATF in my ZF6. Very noticeable difference between all 3 fluids.

I would not be opposed to saving a bit of coin if I could find a fluid that performed as well for more of a bargain price.

Keep us updated sir.

Just to add further commentary to my question in red in the photo of Amalie's ATF PDF above, quoting what Mark Kovalsky, a former Ford transmission calibration test engineer who didn't work on the 4R100, but who did work on the 5R110W, which originally used the Mercon SP fluid, and can now use the Mercon LV fluid interchangeably*, both of which are incompatible with the Mercon V fluid.

MERCON V is not at all similar. It's not even close. MERCON V will destroy the solenoids, and so will most other trans fluids.

Many fluids have anti-foam additives. MERCON V has A LOT of anti-foam. Believe it or not, the anti-foam additive is tiny, tiny, solid particles. They are just the right size to get into a solenoid and jam the armature.
*Per Ford Motor Company:

Initially only the 2009/10MY 5R110 automatic transmissions were filled and serviced with MERCON® LV. In an effort to reduce complexity, Ford Motor Company is allowing all previous model year 5R110 automatic transmissions to be serviced with MERCON® LV automatic transmission fluid. This pertains to top off as well as fluid replacement. Mixing of MERCON® LV and MERCON® SP in the 5R110 transmission is acceptable. Extensive testing has been performed to insure there are no functional or durability concerns with the use of MERCON® LV in the 5R110 automatic transmission.

Vehicles affected are F-Series Super Duty trucks (including chassis cab, motorhome, LCF).
So when ONE fluid claims to be compatible with BOTH Mercon SP AND Mercon V, the question remains... how?

there is also the mercon v blend… probably “safer”. It is about 6.50 a quart…

http://www.amalie.com/Transmission-Fluid/Mercon-V-ATF-Synthetic-Blend

Claim same for valvoline max life apparently. 🤔
https://www.lubricentrojm.cl/ficha-t..._ML_ATF_EN.pdf

I do see some posts of people using valvoline blue bottle import. It says it is compatible with mercon 🤔. Considering it is retired spec. …

the guy that build my trans ~30k miles ago that is very reputable and seems super knowledgeable and also (nononsense and about 75) initially put blue bottle conventional mercon v in… if I can’t figure something else out I may be replacing with same.. not sure yet .

Forgive me for not answering the question directly. I run whatever the transmission builder recommends. In BTS' case, it is Schaeffer All-Trans Supreme.

60K miles between fluid changes is twice as many miles that Ford recommends a fluid be run in the 4R100 transmission.

The recommended service interval is 30K miles, in all circumstances described in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide... including Normal operating conditions.

And this is interesting, because when it comes to changing transmission fluid in the 4R100, Ford's "Normal" service interval at every 30K is the same as all Special Operating Conditions listed, including Towing, Hauling, Extensive Idling, Taxi, Livery, Delivery, Dusty Conditions, and Off Road. All conditions from light to heavy... the owner's manual says to change automatic transmission fluid at 30K miles.

The change frequency of most other fluids (engine, axles, brakes) are a bit more relaxed under "Normal" conditions than "Severe" conditions... except for the automatic transmission, which has the same service interval for all conditions. 30K.

If following what the transmission manufacturer recommends, changing transmission fluid per the scheduled maintenance guide is frequent enough to simplify fluid choice to the spec that the manufacturer approves, which obviously in this case, is Mercon V.

Motorcraft offers Mercon V and Mercon V synthetic blend.

Mobil1 full synthetic transmission fluid meets Mercon V ...not just "recommended for use where Mercon V is specified", but "meets or exceeds Mercon V", meaning that it has been tested and verified and licensed as Mercon V per whatever Ford's requirements are to achieve that verification, even if the requirement was merely a pile of cash.

Mark K has used and recommended Mobil1 in his personal 4R100 (an E-350 van, iirc) as well as in the off road racing team he consulted as the resident transmission expert. I've used Mobil 1 full synthetic as well, for almost the same number of years, but after my stockpile ran out. I switched to Motorcraft Mercon V, due to the higher cost of Mobil1. The fluid will be completely changed out in less than 30K anyway.

Sticking with what Ford approves could be a cop out, but it does keep things simple, eliminating the extra steps in having to figure out or study or compare or send to a lab or decipher and sort through the marketingspeak of.

Regardless of what brand name of transmission fluid one uses or prefers, the appropriate fluid specification, and the frequency of service interval, will both likely have more influence on transmission longevity than any brand name of oil marketer.

I think I'm going to go get a Powerball ticket. I put a Dieselsite 4R100 in at 87k....I have 360k now. I can count on one hand (and have fingers left over) the number of times I've changed/flushed the trans fluid.
