8BA teardowm

Look what followed me home today.
I have low hopes this 8BA engine will prove to be rebuildable but I will tear it down and see what I find. It will be a good learning exercise and parts will be saved, if nothing else.
It is very complete and original except for the Aluminum intake manifold.
I picked it up this morning and started chiseling off, literally, the crud and baked on grease and oil. I got the plugs out, and have the cylinders basting in ATF.
I will see if it will free up but I am going to tear it completely down regardless. The condition of the block is my prime concern. Good money after bad? Possibly, but onward McDuff!
Oh, and a transmission too, bonus.

Put it in a fourth gen camaro or firebird. Restore some balance in the world with the anti LS swap.

Canadian flatheads in a certain period (49 - 51?) came with aluminum manifolds, on both Fords and Mercs. Some Mercs had aluminum manifolds for a square base Holley carb. I have run both. They weigh about 15 lbs less than the cast iron ones.

Fingers crossed on the block! Looks like a nice score! Is that a 3-sp?

Engine came out of a 48, M68 Merc truck, yes 3 speed seems to go into all gears. Lost another 15 lbs without caked on grease and oil.

Nice find,I see its a Merc. via the larger oil filter, my 51 M3 came to me with one as well, along with a alum. intake.

always thought it was stk., straight from a barn in Canada .

I am in process of assembling front axle assm. and the Timken wheel bearings says "made in Canada" very happy about that.
Good luck with your new motor!

I start spring and axle installs today, as soon as I get this beast unloaded.

Air cleaner still attached is a plus, not a guarantee, but a plus.

I will start total teardown in about a month;
we'll see what nastiness I uncover then. For now waiting on things to loosen up some.

Please post pictures of the transmission. Since the combo is out of a M-68 it is very unlikely that it is a light duty three speed. Probably it is a heavy duty three (which are not all that common either) or most likely a crash box four speed. If it is a three and you don't plan on using it, someone on hear probably will want it.

I will take more photos of the transmission tomorrow . I'm not sure what direction I'm headed at this stage.

Looks like a 4-sp crashbox to me, from a larger truck. If not cracked, the rear mount (bearing retainer) may be worth more than the whole trans.
