Question Time to do the EGR cooler- again

My 6.7 has 246,000 miles on it and its time to do the EGR cooler thing again. My question is - does the later model cooler, 2016 and later, fit on the earlier trucks. My truck is a 2011. Looks like the late model cooler is made so that it doesn't clog up as easily and its a ton cheaper, like 90 dollars verses 250+ for the earlier model. Any body have any experience in this??
Thanks-SA

Another option, while not cheaper but more, is Bullet Proof Diesel's 6.7 EGR core replacement made of stainless steel and twisted tubes for reliability.

with the exception of a bunch of sensors which burnt out along the way, it is original, I did replace the original egr cooler at 140K I think.

the bullet proof cooler looks like a work of ART! perhaps too fancy for this work truck. I found another aftermarket cooler made by dorman. about the same cost as the OEM one but of a different design, twisted tubes, which I think will not clog up as fast. FYI: I did put a Bulletproof cooler in my old truck with the 6.0 an it worked fine, definitely better build that the international-ford one.

Yeah right?? For that kind of money it should! After my premium care warranty is up, if I have a problem with mine, I'm going to bite the bullet and get their core. Time will tell when that happens. I don't let my truck idle a lot and I'm going on 80k miles here in about 150 miles.

I thought there was a update flash for the truck that helped with the "coaking" up of the cooler. I never got it. All and all its been a good engine, still goes really good, no oil burning, plenty of power. Like I said before, it manages to roast a sensor occasionally, I try to fix that my self because everytime I take it to the dealer it costs 500.00 or more. The Dorman cooler comes tomorrow, about 300.00 bucks with gaskets. I will try to get back and report about it. It would be the first time I put in a non ford part in it.

$1,000 just for the core, good grief! Is EGR core failure (before and not related to soot plugging occuring) such as due to heat stress an issue with the 6.7? From memory over the years it seems like most reports are soot related issues vs a horror story with coolant.

I don't know of a firmware update for EGR flow changes unless it's newer than the Q2 2018 IDS versions, just that the cooler was later redesigned. If there was an update for the 2011 I'd guess it would be either an auto shutdown timer or auto high idle regardless of ambient temp. I can't imagine Ford would get government approval for less EGR (which would certainly help)!

Mine started showing signs of issues around 95,000 with P0401 becoming increasingly more common after 100k as the miles continued with the truck sounding like it was stopped up by 105k. I thought it was earlier than that but my records prove otherwise.

The first one I replaced threw code PO401 at 120K it think. Took it all apart and found the cooler was all carboned up. All in all, not to bad a job to replace it, thought I would pressure wash out the old cooler and keep it around in case I had the truck long enough to clog up another, but never did, just threw it away. Actually got the pesky bolts out of the exhaust manifold without breaking them, thank god! I hammered on them and tightened them first, applied heat and PB blaster, but guess I just got lucky! Hope I get lucky this time!

Nothing wrong with trying to save some money. Not saying I'd be happy spending that kind of money but I'm all about overkill... As you can tell about my handle. Let us know how it goes... Good luck.

C'mon Bone... You know I'm an aftermarket guy... Bullet Proof makes some good stuff. No idea on that core though and how it works out...
