I set my timing to 10BTDC, when reconnecting the SPOUT, i check it and its at 20, seems like it has a knock that wasnt there before. Do these models not have knock sensors? 1995 351w
Did you follow this procedure:
- have engine at full operating temperature
- turn engine off
- remove SPOUT only when engine is off
- run engine
- set timing to 10, tighten dist. nut, re-check timing is at 10
- turn off engine
- reconnect SPOUT
Nope, do not believe there is a knock sensor.
Is it pinging, like detonation, or knock like a rod knock?
No knock sensor on a 351W. The computer will vary the timing at idle. I’m sure someone knows if 19-20° is normal or too much.
Im almost positive it is, but if anyone else knows, im definitely all ears. Also to be clear the knock is at idle, it goes away with speed unlike a rod knock. Maybe this was a pre existing problem and im just now noticing it.

To add to this, make sure ALL electronic stuff is off. Radio, dome lights, lights, heater etc. Per my manual
