Somewhere between 8 and 10 degrees BTDC is good.

10 degrees is spec. It can probably safely go to 12 or so without detonation. Be sure to set it with the SPOUT disconnected.

I actually have edged my 95, 302 up to 15 degrees with the spout connector unplugged of course. It runs like a whole different truck. It has more power than at 10 degrees and is a little better on fuel.

I'm not saying its a race horse now, but it is better.

Hey guys, what and where is the spout connector?? I am clueless about that. I think my 4.9L emissions sticker says set at 10 Deg BTDC with in-line spout connector removed . There is a little symbol at the end of the instruction, does that symbol mean something?

Ive heard about setting the timing...and some what watched my brother in law set in on my 302. We had to mess with the distributor to get the TFI off since i had to replace it, and screwed the timing up. He got it back close as he could (i didnt know you have to disconnect the spout). What all do you exactly have to do? Thanks...

On the 92 and later trucks, the SPOUT connector is generally on the left inner fender, closer to the firewall. It is a small grey plug that goes into a two-wire connector. Just remove the grey plug when you're setting your timing and otherwise follow the underhood sticker for the procedure and timing setting.

this poster is correct, the plug is perhaps 3/4 inch by 3/8 inch and has red in the center, wire colors I think are green and green/yellow or yellow. All you are doing is pulling a bridge and disabling spark advance.

10* BTDC is where you want to be at around 900-1100 rpm (adj screw for idle on throttle body.

warning: if using MAF, dont advance it past spec.

How do you disconnect the spout on a 91 since the TFI harness is on the distributor? Is it just one wire you have to pull out of the connector?

Ford puts the spout 1 of 2 places - near the dist held to the main TFI harness with tape, or near the master cylinder near the firewall.

all it is is a loop back for the spark timing signal - extra long wire that you pull the jumper out of.

Im not familar with timing at all so sorry if its dumb question..only thing ive ever done was watch my brother in law set it last week, and we didnt know we had to disconnect the spout, and from what i saw, all it looked like was he was moving the distributor around i guess?

It took me and my brother forever to find the spout but we found it. The truck is an 87 and it was on the let side close to the firewall like these guys said.
