Dana 44 HELP. Discs or Drums?

This axle is on FB. Myself and the seller are unsure if this is Discs or drum. He said he thinks it came out of a 78/79 F150. I need a new HP center section and covert my EB to Discs without breaking the bank. Are the hubs disc or drum? Thanks Chuck

I don't think '78-'79 could have had drums in front. So if it's really that I'm thinking it must be disk. But sorry, I can't tell by the looks. And if it's only "he thinks" it's from a '78-'79, then the risk goes up.

One issue with the '78 - '79 is that the "footballs" are cast as a part of the tubes. And if you try to cut them off you end up with holes where they were. So if you're thinking about being able to move the footballs you might want to look at '77 or older axles that have welded-on footballs.

Unless that rear is under 100$ walk away.... If you have a 44 on the bronc you can use your knuckles with the "chevy" conversion. Its actually not chevy, its Dana who made the rears conversion- you would use your existing knuckles out and buy the new hub assemblies, backing plates and rotors. Those rears factory used a slide caliper setup like a 2wd F150 from the same era. I knocked off a set of knuckles to convert and EB to disc once.

That rear it what I call a 44HD rear. It weighs about twice as muck as you EB 44.

https://torqueking.com/category/1967...hd-front-axle/

This will explain it. It is a 12 bolt and used a bigger ring and pinion as well than a standard 44. The EB 44 is a ten bolt 44.

If you cut one of these monsters down, you will have a really tough front rear - but the downside is the weight. It will be no stronger than trussing you EB 44 and because its forward facing the high pinion is not really a huge upgrade will running I high pinion rear where it helps miss obstacles. It will help driveling angles if you are trying to run 44" tall tires thought.

I think the one you are looking at is missing the disc backing plates......
