Oil Consumption

I have an 2016 with 116,000 miles on it. Changed my oil on Sunday with 6 months and 7,500 since the last change. I had poured in 13 quarts 6 months ago but only drained out 11 quarts from the pan and the filter. Would that normal consumption of oil?

Some oil would still be in the oil filter, no matter how well you drained the filter. I would keep an eye on it by checking the dipstick over the next few trips to fill up with diesel.

With over 100k miles, there may be more blow by as well as the engine has more wear on it. Just thinking out loud.

I have done it twice and both times have come out to be around 11 quarts. First diesel that I have owned so not sure on usage.

2 quarts "used" is considered normal consumption. I would not worry. I would worry about "making oil". "Making oil" is fuel washing by the rings from idling or wear or other causes.

My 2009 6.4 used to "make" almost 2 quarts of oil between 5,000 miles oil changes. I was always amazed that the amount of fuel dilution didn't result in wiped bearings. The amount of oil "production" never varied over the 110,000 miles I had the truck.

Same here, I'm at about 3-3.5% fuel dilution in my oil from the past few Blackstone oil analyses I've done.

Is the oil reading low on your dipstick? Because if your engine consumed 2 quarts of oil you will definitely notice that on your dipstick.

Actually did not check it. Will start checking now, going to check it after one week and see what I get.

weekly checks with the truck in the same spot and direction after an over night cold soak is how I check mine.
