Went on a 392 mile outing to the mountains to escape some heat. About 200 miles flat, 100 miles hills and the other miles were mountain roads and forest roads. Speeds were 65-70, 30-35 and 5-10 on forest road. Used the 4L on some occasions just back out of some trouble and overall exercise the transfer case. The heat was 107 at the only fuel stop before the mountains so I left the truck running to keep the dog cool. There was some time idling when stopped to check out the road ahead on some rarely used forest roads.
The Northstar Laredo truck camper was loaded with 50 gallons of water and food and equipment for a week. I should have weighed it but it usually runs 3,200 lbs but just wanted to get out of the heat. Running Cooper ST MAX 275 70 18 with 4:30 gears and in tow haul mode averaging 11 MPG for the trip. The 7.3 ran great only dropping out of 10th on some bigger hills.
The other truck was about 1 1/2 MPG less with a lot less power and displacement. My 06 F350 V10 was 2-2 1/2 MPG less.
Very happy with this new combination.
