I am looking for the shortest auto trans, like a C4 or something, that is adaptable to a D300 or D20 Transfer case. This is going into my 78 CJ5, so driveline length is at a premium. I tried Novak-adapt, but they do not have anything other than GM transmissions in their knowledge base. I have a 89 5.0HO in it, so I need a Ford transmission, or at least one that fits a bellhouse that is compatible with the T18/T17x/T150 transmission. I already have the D300 and D20 transfer cases, and it needs to be a passenger side drop setup.
I don't know for sure, but I'd guess the C4 is the shortest you're going to find in a Ford auto trans, But the trans I most hear about people putting in short CJs is a Chrysler. I don't recall exactly which one, or if it's adaptable to a small block Ford. But I know people put them on small block Chevies, so there must be some ability to adapt them.
I've seen the Jeep 32RH tranny and it is very short. I actually saw one of these trans under a CJ5 with a 300 behind it. I pulled the 300 from it for a project, but was amazed at how short that trans was. If you're looking for an adapter from 32RH to D300, I'm your huckleberry and have one for sale as I won't be using that adapter. In a CJ5, I'd say the 32RH is ideal, length wise. Good luck with the tranny problems, the only type of tranny problems you want to deal with.
