Injector tune up...success!

Injector maintenance went well yesterday! I shimmed the armature plates which were mostly around .002" clearance and torqued the hold down bolts. I did not due the hot torque as often recommended but I did crank them to 125-130 in-lbs using my new ACDelco electronic torque adapter. I saw this tool reccomended by another forum user I forget who it was now but it's a great tool especially for this job so thanks whoever that was.

Result is the idle and light cruise clatter is noticably improved. The injectors themselves are clearly working much better than they were (improved actual injection timing vs commanded start of injection?) As the turbo is absolutely singing in a way it never has, I can hardly get it to roll coal anymore on my DP tuner 80hp daily tune and I'm getting at least 3psi more boost at peak than ever before. My old crunchy mechanical boost gauge from Banks has pretty poor resolution and questionable accuracy.

Anyway that's all. Just wanted to share my experience. I highly suggest both of these procedures for you guys with highish miles trucks like mine with questionable maintenance from previous ownership! For reference mine is 256k miles old and ran "fine" but sounded like old farm equipment and was uncomfortably loud inside. Plus it clearly could have been performing better.

I might help future readers if you state where you bought your solenoid shims from since you are clearly happy with how the procedure went.

I got them from the same big auction site vendor that I believe most get them from called "truckrental" the kit was very complete including the required tools. The tools were not cheap garbage either as the torx bits included were high quality Wiha brand. The instructions were clear as could be and the procedure was straightforward if a bit tedious. Lots of spares included in case you slip up.

eBay store truckrental located at this link: https://www.ebay.com/usr/truckrental...p2047675.l2559

Thanks for your thoughts on the injector shim process and the quality of the kit.

Glad to leave a bread crumb in this giant bucket of bread crumbs at the bottom of our big toaster that is Ford trucks. I would have been more specific but I've grown accustomed to some forums frowning on the disscussion of "the big auction site" so I gave all the rest of the info hahaha that is the link indeed.

So what kit did you get? The shims for $130.oo then the tools for $25.oo? Just asking because I got the o rings already from Clay. Do we really need five hundred shims? Or that is the only way they sell them. Thanks for your response a head of time!

The kit I got was around 70 or 80 bucks and did not include the O rings. It came with 3 sizes of shim .002, .003, .004. Following the kit instructions I used on .004 on each armature screw for a total of 8 used. I shimmed the solenoid bolts x4 with one .003 and one .002 each for a total of 32 of each of those sizes. Hardly any need for 500! I didn't count how many I got in my kit but it was most definitely not 500. The envelope for each size was around 1 inch by 1 inch and they were not fat stuffed full.

Oharal, thank you, I think I found the one you used. It's $75.oo . They also have one with screws, it's $110.oo, I guess we don't need that one? I saved this in case one day I decide to do. I am really close to getting a T4 now that I am towing heavy. I guess I'll figure out how to smog it later.

The link to the specific kit I used is below. The kit came with new armature screws with a torx head as well as the Wiha torx tool to install with. Apparently its common to break the armature screw when removing the screw and the instructions state to take care to push down hard on the tool when removing but mine were all just past finger tight if you ask me...

Thank you again. I believe that is the one I saved. Lots of guys have changed injectors because of hard cold starts. This might of worked well for them from what I read.

This is great news. This will be my solution if I feel my injectors need the attention in the future. I want to get them to 500,000. I know, it's just my own weird goal LOL

Thanks Jim for your input. I didn't want to rebuild the whole injectors, but maybe in the future the cell annoyed. Electrical part anyway. But this to is good new.
