I pulled up to a red light yesterday engine died. It will start idle and run in neutral. But soon as I put it in drive and lurches and the engine stalls. I can put it in reverse and back up without a problem but unable to go forward.
if I get a rolling start then put it in drive it will run (not well) forward.
Any suggestions? I’m thinking I need to start with the module and fresh fluid (over 100k on current trans fluid).
I can't come up with any way the VSS could do this.
It's stalling because the torque converter clutch is stuck on. There is a hydraulic circuit that forces it to unlock in reverse. My two guesses are that either the torque converter clutch solenoid is stuck on, or the torque converter clutch control valve is stuck.
There are two versions of the solenoid body. I assume that's what you mean when you refer to the module. That's where the torque converter clutch solenoid is located. There was one version for the early 1999 trucks, and a second version for later 1999 and newer 4R100s. Your's is the latter.
If that doesn't fix it, the problem is most likely a stuck valve. Unfortunately that valve is in the pump body, so the transmission would need to come out to get to it.
Additional symptom. Runs rough on the low end like it’s missing on several cylinders. I had worked on the MAS before this all went to crap, not sure if there could be s connection.
It wasn't the solenoid body, and having no codes stored means it isn't an electrical problem, so that leaves this:
