Single mom has trans problem
I am trying to help a single mom with a transmission problem. She has a 2000 Excursion 4WD with a V10. It has no reverse, in fact seems to try and go a little forward when you gas it, Neutral is like 2nd gear, drive seems normal at least when you drive it all of the shift points seem normal. I had hoped that the switch on the side of the transmission where the linkage hooked up meant that is was electronicaly shifted and the switch could be bad. I guess it is just the back up lights and neutral safety switch? This women has had a tough life and I am trying to fix her truck cheap, any help would be great. Yes, it's electrically shifted. No, that sensor on the side of the trans is NOT the problem.
I suspect internal damage, I think the forward clutch may have failed and welded itself together.
What does the fluid look and smell like? Red, brown, or black? Does it smell like oil, or does it smell burnt?

Mark, thanks for the quick reply. Did not check the fluid, will get over and check it out. Doubt that she has the money to repair or replace the transmission. You helped me out so much, I really did not know what could be wrong. Would it throw any codes? Check engine light is not on, but I know there can be codes anyway. Thanks again for helping me out, I see you are a retired transmission engineer, it is great that your out there helping the shade tree mechanics.
