I toy with the idea myself. Sssooo many factors can come into play such as tune, injectors, other mods, needs, ect....
If I go for a replacement I would call KC Turbos, & TurbotimeUSA.com (local to me), and give them my specs and what I need the truck to do. They can usually recommend what you would need. Then I'd decide.
After talking to Charlie at KC Turbos, I went with the KC Stage II. At the time I was still running stock injectors and it towed GREAT with that setup (updated truck and it tows even better).
The stage II doesn't like to be lugged (below 2k PRM) with a load because the temps begin to climb. Once she spools, she pulls hard and doesn't quit.
Now there is a new(er) stage II that is improved, so keep that in mind.
Talk to Charlie and he will pick your brain and recommend the correct turbo.......BEST THING I EVER DID......hands down. 4 years and not one issue
Another vote for the KC 1.5 since you're towing a bunch. My stage 2 doesn't tow well but it goes like a bat out of hell.
Hi Tim,
I don't have any experience with the 1.5, but I was curious why your stage II didn't tow well?
It took a little getting used to at first, and Charlie warned me of the RPM range it likes, but it didn't take long for me to fall in love with it. My stage II is really an all-around great turbo and I am super glad I went with that particular model.

Mine runs a bit hot on EGT's, but then it always has (maybe it's just the gauge). Nothing extreme, but warmer than I like. Being that William is towing a LOT of weight, the 1.5 MAY be a better option. I do tow with a different tune than my daily driver and it helps because of different transmission shifting, but still a bit warmer than I like. Maybe it's just my foot
I totally understand the EGT's. I will say this, towing my 37' fifth wheel I never hit above1350* and that is on a good climb pulling 3200RPM. The stage II likes the higher RPM and once it is up there it cools quick.
I run gearhead and have been very happy with the performance and customer service.
