Hello all,
Recently (past couple months) I have noticed that the truck makes a humming noise shortly after turning off the ignition. It almost sounds to me like a pump of some sorts that’s trying to prime itself. It seems to be lasting for over a minute and lasting longer as time goes on. Does anyone know what this could be. Definitely coming from engine compartment.
It might be the DEF pump sucking the DEF out of the line. This is one of the sounds heard when you shut off the truck.
Have you searched the forum? There are some threads about various engine compartment sounds. I don't worry about the sounds now days as long as they are not coming from the truck the next time i go to drive it. lol
Is this with key out the ignition, and for a few seconds, or minutes? I know mine, and other 6.7s I have heard all have their clicks and hums on shut down. And just depending on how far I traveled and how hot the engine is seems to factor how many noises it makes. And that said, none sound out of the ordinary or mechanically bad.
I do notice the sounds are less if I allow the truck to sit in P for about 45 seconds before turning it off, usually then just the DEF pump, and something else that clicks under the hood. Never longer than 20 seconds though.
Depending on your year it is most likely the wastegate at the turbo. a search will have many post on it. Dealers used to replace but now say it is nothing to be concerned about.
It's the waste gate control valve. It sounds like a muffled mini 12v air compressor. Mine will start buzzing 30 seconds after shutdown and while the engine is idling. It's loud enough now I can sometimes hear it at idle outside of the cab and started doing this about 14 months ago. It didn't do this for over 70,000 miles but it's now considered "normal." I'm planning to ask about it again when my truck is at the dealer next week for other issues to see if I get a different answer. The TSB was 13-10-7.
most likely waste gate control valve. Mines been doing it for over a year. You can replace the harness / solenoid to the waste gate to get rid of the noise but it doesn't not damaging your truck.
