Extended Service Plan (Yes Or No)

Good Morning
I am looking to buy a very clean 2015 King Ranch 4x4 6.7 with 72k on the truck. The dealer is asking $48,000 but I'm hoping to talk them down. With it having so many mile on the truck in such a short time and not really knowing the history of the truck. Would it be a smart purchase to get the extended service plan for $2500.

I have an 8yr/125,000 mile Ford ESP plan on my truck and it works for me. If your dealer is offering a Ford plan that covers most major components, this might be a solid idea if you are covered for the length of time and miles you plan on owning the truck. Although not common, when important items break, these trucks can be very expensive to get back on the road.

These plans are not for everyone. Some people have no trouble writing large checks to get their beasts fixed because they never purchase these plans and when something under the hood stops working, they use their saved funds to get their beasts running again.

No real right or wrong answer, just what works for you. If this is 8 years and 125,000 miles, seems like a good price.

If you plan to tune or delete your truck, don't purchase a plan.

Bruce thanks for the reply. The plan is for 3yrs 36000 miles for $2500 and for a couple hundred more they can extend it out to 4 yrs 48000 miles. I'm on the fence on delete. If I have no issues with the emission I'll keep it on. But with that being said if I have issues, the warranty will cover it....

before you buy a Ford ESP from the dealer you are working with, get online to Flood or Zeigler. Both sell Ford ESP's, but hugely discounted. I bought 125K/6yr's for $2500 on my 1 year old 2016.

The repairs on these trucks can be quite expensive, even just to diagnose. I am morally opposed to extended warrantees, but I bought one for my truck. However before you buy one from the local dealer, check floodfordesp.com to see what the real price should be. Local dealers will practically give you the truck, as long as they can sell an extended warrantee - the profit margin is that good.

Check with Flood or Zeigler as mentioned above. Here is Flood's and Zeigler's url.

http://www.zeiglerfordesp.com/

Ask dealer to match the Flood price on ESP.

BTW, the ESP does not kick in till after the 3/36K. I am not sure what they are giving you with the 3/36K. To add 3/36K, the coverage would be for a total of 6 years and 72K miles. The 3/36K and ESP run from the "In Service" date of the first first owner and the date it was sold to them. I went with 7/125K on my 2015.

Zeigler allows you to finance with Ford for 12 months at 0% interest with 10% down payment.

I've always gotten the ESP since the 6.4 and 6.7 engines came out and so far my 2011 truck came out way ahead with large savings due to warranty coverage. My current 2015 has not. I used to offer the opinion that it is wise to buy the extended warranty but lately I have been moving away from it.

The main radiator is still something that fails and it used to be included in the warranty, now it's not. It only covers the engine, turbo, fuel pump, transmission, axles/diff. Right?

I believe Ford has had the 6.7 out long enough to where they have refined the fine print in the warranty making it less of a bargain than it used to be. Over time they've learned to cover the right things ensuring them of profit. Look carefully into what components specifically are covered. I believe the 6.7 is now pretty solid.

It also depends on how you use the truck. Lots of miles, lots of towing or hauling, or just occasional use?

Alright here is an update. I ended up pulling out of the deal I was interested in. Turned out the truck had a fair amount of rust to the bolts and undercarriage. The more I looked the worst the deal started looking. So I am still looking. I did call Flood and Ziegler. Flood wasn't able to give me a ESP and Ziegler was a little higher than the dealer. I really appreciate the help all of you gave. Once I finally find my truck I'll let you know.
Thank again

Not to ruin your purchase of an awesome truck, but... I purchased my 2015 King Ranch w/ 8' bed 4x4 Crew Cab 6.7L diesel for $50,080 out the door (price inc. Tax, Tag & Title) with 16,500 miles on it.

You can always go back to it if you know it's there. 70k miles is not too bad. My 2015 has almost 180k on it.....

Yes but, rust is something I don't want to deal with.
