Hey folks, My heat control operates from the center to the far right (hot) perfectly, but from the center to the left (cool) is seems like it is pushing against a spring and then it bounces right back to the center. Anyone ever seen that before? Non-AC truck.
You can see the little lever move on the front of the heater box (passenger floor board) when you go from the middle to the right. But go to the left and it doesn't budge a bit.
Have any of yours had factory AC? I wonder if it's extra space to allow for the throw of the air conditioning side of things and they just took it up with a spring. Doesn't seem right, but might be.
Watch the crank lever which moves the flapper door, on the outside of the heater box, while you move the control lever on the dash.
You can disconnect the cable and see if the cable is really moving that lever through its whole range of travel. Could be a bunch of crap inside the box, impeding movement of the flapper doors inside...
I'd bet the small metal tab/screw that holds the cable outer body #18518 or #18552 to the back side of the lever panel area has came loose and let the cable body slip out and move with the lever, instead of moving just the cable.
You have to remove the outer dash bezel and then 4 screws to pull the control panel out a bit to see behind it.
OK, so just for the sake of search history and helping the next guy... here's the solution for my situation.
This slider mechanism on the heater box in the passenger floorboard was adjusted wrong. You loosen the screw, slide the flapper all the way to the cool side and then adjust the cable (and dash lever) accordingly, tighten the screw and reattach the cable. Took a few seconds once i figured it out.
FYI, the amount of travel in the dash lever is equal to the travel in the flapper, so if you have one set wrong, then you either aren't getting full cool or full heat. Can't have it all kinda situation.
Thanks for helping me think it through. Next update.... my original AM radio arrived today! Can't wait to get it in and get rid of the 1980s walmart special.
