low fuel pressure message... first issue with new truck
Hi guys, I have a 2016 F350 i purchased about a year ago and now has 7500 miles. last night it tossed up a low fuel pressure message and then de-rated then wouldnt start, i heard a crazy humming sound before it shut off. they pulled the fuel filters "claimed it was gelled" even though it fired right up once it got to the dealership. the fuel i run is good to -9*F and i use ford anti-gel on top of that. So they changed the filters and it wouldnt start again. now they are dropping the tank. So has anybody gone through this and ford still honored the warranty on the fuel system? Im not sure what they are gonna find but I am meticulous when it comes to pulling all the foil off of the anti-gel bottle before even opening the cap. I dont know what could possibly be in the tank to cause the issue.
The humming would normally be the low pressure pump, and cavitation could certainly be the cause of that. A loose pickup tube in the tank, or a poorly sealed O-Ring on the filter housing, drain ****, or supply fitting are possible causes - besides the previously mentioned cardboard caps and gelled fuel. Hopefully it is something simple.
Thanks Seabee. The humming sounded like it was coming from under the hood but it wouldnt suprise me if it was the low pressure pump noise following the frame... funny how noise transfer works. The truck was running all night previous to it having issues so I'm almost 100% positive its not gelled... ive never seen a truck thats been running for over an hour have gelling issues. Im seriously hoping its a fuel pickup issue or something of that nature. It hasn't had any fuel filters changed previous to this issue. And I drain the filter every month which I already had over 200 miles since the last drain interval so i would imagine the issue would have arisen previous to this. My main concern is if they find something that was either vandalism or not related to ford if they will still honor my warranty if there is a fuel system related issue..
Was the humming with the engine on, engine off, or right after it shut off? If right after it shut off, it COULD be the wastegate solenoid - which should be unrelated to your issue. If it was doing it while the engine was running, you COULD have been sending air to the high pressure pump, and hearing the air escaping through the pressure control valve, or going through the pump. If it was prior to starting the engine, it was likely coming from the low pressure pump. If it was sucking air through the low pressure pump, you could also hear the air being pushed through the system under the hood - even with the engine off.
Unless you saw metal in your filter, I wouldn't worry too much about the HPFP. On the '15 and up, they coated the pistons in the pump to make them a bit more durable. Hopefully, they don't prove me wrong.
Nothing was mentioned to me about any material in the filters. so they did change the pump?! I thought they just increased the stroke and bores I didnt know they actually applied a coating. Believe me im rooting for you to be right hahaha
Besides increasing the stroke, there is supposedly also now a coating to compensate for the lower lubricity of ULSD. Same basic pump with a few small changes though.

It sure does not sound like it was gelled, especially since the truck was running for an hour, there is a thermal recirculation valve in between the supply and return lines that sends heated return fuel back to the suction of the low pressure fuel pump/fuel conditioning module and after an hour of operation the fuel in the tank should be warm enough to not gel considering you were also treated with Ford Anti-gel. What was the temperature outside? I have had my 2011(traded last Saturday...) in some pretty cold weather all night and gotten the Low Fuel Pressure warning. The truck continued to run normal.
it was only 14*. not that cold considering it was driven in -10 with the same tank. I have never had a truck gel up on me in the 7 years ive been driving diesels, and most of those trucks didnt have a fuel heater and never stored inside. I hope its not the high pressure pump. They are supposed to get back to me here shortly with what they find (if anything) in the tank.
found out that it was a cardboard cap from a additive bottle. however i have only used ford additive and the cap is much larger than what the ford bottles are. so im going to be speaking to the selling dealer tomorrow.
