Yes it will work. I went the opposite way on my truck when I lifted it with no ill effects.
That being said, in 1989 the speedometer was read off of a gear in the transmission/transfer case. In your truck, it's read off of the rear end on a tone ring. The 89 axle has no provisions for that.
update: Got the axle for $110 with some "slight" rust. supposedly out of a '96 truck, but pinion length is different from my '95 pinion...so I'm guessing it's an older axle. works, so no biggie
got her cleaned up with prodigious use of a hammer and chisel. then all new brake lines and installed.
VSS on the pumpkin works. just need to get that conversion u-joint. it drives around the block right now, but I'm not happy with the slop
anyone have a pic of the "older style straps" that are needed with the conversion u-joint?
my '95 axle straps are bolted through the pinion with a nut
the "new" axle straps are slightly different shaped, and use a torx bolt that threads directly into the pinion

oh cool.i replaced mine last year with a moog.i wrote down moog in my records but forgot the part#.i was at a job and had to pull the rear shaft, lock the hubs and go to the auto store in front wheel drive.replace it and go back to work.in my haste i didn't record to part number......so thanks!
i suppose i could of looked it up and figured it out but i forgot about it.so good to have in my records.
I put a long snout from a '94 in my '89 and had to piece together a u-joint from 3 u-joints. I used 2 small caps from one, the cross from the 2nd one, and 2 caps from the 3rd. There was one listed that was the correct size out of the box but they didn't have it and it was 4 days away by order. Thank goodness I have a very patient parts store to go to!
