Short Snout 10.25 vs Long Snout 10.25

Long story short, my '95 pinion bearing is wasted. Has a ton of play side to side and front to back. Also my drums are shot/frozen on axle

Found a '89 10.25 for $150 with good brakes and new pinion seal.

Will my slip yoke be able to accommodate the shorter snout on the '89 axle? I found 1 thread saying yes...but want to make sure

The difference between long and short pinion is 3/8" ...

I have gone both ways without issue on stock height trucks. It could be an issue on a lifted truck!

Yes it will work. I went the opposite way on my truck when I lifted it with no ill effects.

That being said, in 1989 the speedometer was read off of a gear in the transmission/transfer case. In your truck, it's read off of the rear end on a tone ring. The 89 axle has no provisions for that.

thx for the confirmation guys. I was aware of the speed sensor...but honestly all my driving is <50 mph here, so I could live without the speedo

I did some door sticker decoding and axle tags...and I have the 4.10 gears with a Dana 50 up front

found another 4.10 axle a little bit closer for $175. gonna pick it up tomorrow. the original 10.25 I found this morning was a 3.55LS.

87 and up 10.25 has VSS ... It was only used for ABS until 92 I believe when the speedo went electric.

That does NOT mean they didn't use pre 87 housings in post 86 applications!

i put a short yoke (1989) axle in place of the long yoke (1993) in chip truck.

parts required:

Carquest Part #2-3050 Rear of Rear Drive Shaft Conversion U-Joint & Moog #331-10 Yoke Strap Kit.

chip truck is a 4wd truck with a slip yoke transfer case.the driveshaft just didn't slide in as far as it used to (but more than enough still)

I'm with Festus.

My 87 has tone ring on the carrier and a sensor in the top of the pumpkin.

The boiling point for the OP is ... We all agree long and short pinion swap ok!

The OP needs to ensure it has a VSS port (and or sensor) in the top of the housing.

I assume it's a SRW (Single Rear Wheel)?

update: Got the axle for $110 with some "slight" rust. supposedly out of a '96 truck, but pinion length is different from my '95 pinion...so I'm guessing it's an older axle. works, so no biggie

got her cleaned up with prodigious use of a hammer and chisel. then all new brake lines and installed.

VSS on the pumpkin works. just need to get that conversion u-joint. it drives around the block right now, but I'm not happy with the slop

anyone have a pic of the "older style straps" that are needed with the conversion u-joint?

my '95 axle straps are bolted through the pinion with a nut
the "new" axle straps are slightly different shaped, and use a torx bolt that threads directly into the pinion

Done that. Fwd steering sucks lol

I was having no luck finding the 2-3050 u-joint. So started searching by sizing. That's where the Moog 448 comes from.

I put a long snout from a '94 in my '89 and had to piece together a u-joint from 3 u-joints. I used 2 small caps from one, the cross from the 2nd one, and 2 caps from the 3rd. There was one listed that was the correct size out of the box but they didn't have it and it was 4 days away by order. Thank goodness I have a very patient parts store to go to!
