I just received an original 1984 Ford F-Series sales brochure, and it says that the "Top of the Line" truck for that year was the Ford XLT. There is no "Lariat" model to be found throughout the entire catalog.
Both the 1985 and 1986 sales brochures list the top model as the XLT Lariat, with no separate XLT model.
I just wanted to post this, because wikipedia doesn't list an "XLT" model by itself in any years from 1980 - 1986. They list a 1980-1981 "Ranger XLT" and 1982-1986 "XLT Lariat." That is what I always thought as well.
Does anyone have a 1982 or 1983 "Lariat" model or know if they exist?

Mine is a 1982 XLT Lariat. From what I can tell the differences are the grade carpet, the Lariat" badge on the cab and faux rosewood trim on dash steering wheel and door panels. There are probably other features that there's more experienced then I would know. Also mine has two tone paint
I can share with you that my truck is an 82 with the XLT on the cab, XLT radio bezel, no chrome trim on the door panels, all black steering wheel cover, vinyl floor, and two tone vinyl seat.
Whenever I buy parts it always seems that I have to select XLT Lariat since XLT is usually not an option.
This might not clear anything up for you but at least it's a bit more info realative to "1982-1986 XLT Lariat" as mine is clearly not the top of the line.
Rick - As shown below, the catalog says the Lariat name plate was used 80 - 86. However, while the catalog is an excellent tool it is not infallible. So, just because it shows the name plate was used for all the years that does not mean it happened.
I'll check with Bill/NumberDummy and see if he knows.
My '84 has wood accents on door panels and dash..along with chrome trim on the door panels...carpet that goes up the back wall..full fabric headliner. Seat..which Gary has now... was vinyl with printed vinyl inserts..There is nothing on the space above the radio..No XL..XLT..etc..and no Lariat anywhere..
From what I can see in the catalog, there's no way to determine from the VIN or the Certification Label whether the truck was a custom or Lariat, or anything between. If I'm wrong on that please correct me.
But, I have written to Bill so maybe he can shed some light on this.
