I can't get my truck to start. The block heater isn't working and I previously put flush and water in it, intending to drive it and flush it directly after. Well I never really could drive it and now it won't start again. The weather is going to turn off cold, around zero this weekend. I need to know how to keep the block from freezing and cracking!
is opening and draining sufficient. I read somewhere here that some is left in the engine. Also do I leave hoses and plugs open or close them? (I figure if it does freeze plugging the hole will cause those areas to freeze/stress).
There are some block drain plugs on each side of the motor. One just above the starter and one on the opposite side next to the oil filter. Remove them and let it all drain out ASAP!!
The heater core could probably be blown out with lung pressure alone? It will be enough to get most of the coolant mix out anyway. Same deal with the radiator and block, so long as most of it is drained by gravity there will be no expansion to worry about because there won't be hardly anything left.
As for the heater core, pull both hoses off the nipples and blow it out. Hold both hoses above the level of the core with one a little higher than the other. Pour coolant into the higher hose until it runs out of the other one. Pour in another quart or so for good measure.
Couldn't he simply drain the radiator out for now and add 3 gallons of antifreeze? Then run the engine and the heater, or just take a ride. Simple and fast.

Just thinking here, even though it won't start doesn't the water pump spin when the engine is cranking? So, you could remove the thermostat, then fill the radiator with the proper mixture of coolant/water. Then crank the engine/water pump to push coolant through since the thermostat is out.
I do boat work on the side and here is what I do for winterizing It will work for the engine well. Drain block at drain plugs blow out heater, drain radiator. pull the thermostat then replace hose fill the block completely with RV antifreeze. It will fill all voids and mix with any water that may be there. It is good to -50. It is cheap and easy to deal with later when you want to get it out. You could also fill the radiator as well.
