120V Outlet Pushed into Console

I went to plug a phone charger into the 120 volt outlet and it just pushed into the center console. Is there an easy way to get at the space between the storage area and the back of the console so I can see what happened and repair it?

I believe this link will show you have to get to that area of the console...

Larry, thanks so much for that helpful link. I need to replace my 120 volt outlet. It no longer holds a plug.

Take it out and take it apart. You can easily bend the tangs so they will hold a plug again. Did it on mine and need to do it again. The plug pulls straight out without disassembling anything.

Thanks, Steve. I figured I might be able to take it apart and fix it. I will do that in the next few days.

Are you saying I can pull the plug straight out with out taking the cup holder section off?

I removed mine with a couple of screwdrivers gently (I skipped the gently part) prying it out. It may be better to access the back part if you can. To reinstall the plug you just push it in and it has a friction fit. When I removed mine I broke one of the friction fit tangs. Still works ok but doesn't fit real tight anymore. If you can access the rear of the plug you may be able to pinch the tangs in better making removal easier.

Steve, I did successfully repair my plug. I did take the rear top and end of the console off. I do not have much vision in my right eye (recovering from a detached retina) and it was much easier for me to see what I was doing by taking end piece out in sunlight on the picnic table.

I got the receptacle out with no problem by squeezing the tangs on one side and then the other side. It took me a little bit to figure out how to take the receptacle apart. But I did so successfully and squeezed the tangs together. It won't last; that is one cheaply made Chinese receptacle. But it will work for a while.

Again, thank you for your guidance. Another successful project!

Thanks for the update Carl. Glad you got it going again. If you ever find a replacement of higher quality let us know. The stock one is pretty cheap.

Thanks for the link Larry. Very good instructions on how to access the inside of the console. As it turns out my tangs are so bad that there is zero friction when inserting a plug. I have the plug out but am not doing as good as a job as Carl figuring out how to take the receptacle apart. Any hints for me Carl or Steve? Or anyone else that has successfully taken the receptacle apart.

Thanks,
Al

You have to squeeze the friction tangs or pry with a small screw driver to get the thing apart. Those friction tangs hold the receptacle together. I did one at at time to get the separation started. Once apart, it just snaps back together.
