Help please! Started having transmission issues about 6 mos ago on my sons 1996 Ranger 3.0 (slipping, not shifting, ect.)...had the transmission rebuilt as it did not fix the problem...Replaced the computer and was good for about 4-5 months. Few weeks ago same problem starts again (not shifting into gear, dropping out of gear, ect) except this time I get a P0761 code and the O/D light flashes sometimes. Had a 1yr warranty on the computer so I replaced it with a new one and problems continue the same. Do I have an electrical problem or do I need to replace the solenoid C?
Welcome to FTE.
P0761, Solenoid C performance, or stuck off. Could be an electrical wiring, or connector, or solenoid problem. Seeing as how the OD light is flashing, use your ELM scantool to scan the tranny computer for All trouble code clues its stored & post All code Numbers.
EDIT: Some other things to think about. http://engine-codes.com/p0761_ford.html
You might have an electrical issue. More precisely a ground issue. A while back I had a 98 Taurus. It had the same po code as your ranger. What I found was a ground strap that was up under the wipers was completely corroded off. The other end bolted to the head. I replaced the ground strap with a new one from dorman. I know there's a few ground straps on my sons ranger.
Id clean your battery terminals clean an inspect all ground points. My sons
ranger was flashing the battery light on the dash. Went and bought new brushes for alternator. Before I installed the brushes I decided to clean all the grounds. It started raining and never got to brushes. Still in the box.
He drove it the next day no more problems. It's been almost a week now still no more problem. Grounding issues can cause all kinds of problems including transmission codes. Wonder how many vehicles have been junked because it was thought something major was wrong. Good luck
