strange thing happened yesterday and again today. i have my compressor hooked up to up fitter #3 ,turned it on yesterday to fill the tank back up to 120psi. before it filled up i shut the truck off to fuel up..but the compressor kept running for a few seconds after the truck was off. and today doing some running around the compressor turned on out of the blue when i was driving..but the switch was off. the shut off switch (on the compressor itself) turns it on at around 90psi and shuts off at 120, but the thing filled my tank to 180 before i noticed it was on, pulled over to shut the truck off and again it ran for 10-15 seconds after the truck was off. I'm pretty confused. maybe it has something to do with the build up of snow under the truck, we just got 16" two days ago. but still when the up fitter is off shouldn't that cut the power from the accessory hooked up to it?
I would attribute the tank filling to 180 psi to an air compressor related problem. Maybe a tank pressure switch malfunction.
The other problems sounds more like a wiring problem. I would chase the wiring to make sure you are actually connected to the wire colors you think you need to to operate the air compressor.
Did you wire the compressor directly to the upfitter switch, or is the switch controlling a relay that came with the compressor, and the relay is wired direct to one of the battery's? If so, then it is the relay going bad, it is sticking closed, so the compressor always has power.

^^^^ This....It really sounds like a sticking/failing relay to me.

yes i used a relay. its been running flawlessly for the past 6-7 months. i did go to the car wash and clean around the tank and compressor, it was caked with snow. i just can't believe when i cut the power it still runs. i cannot remember how i hooked up the relay off hand (i did follow the directions to the T, just can't remember by looking at it what wire went where) first time I've used one i usually cut them off and direct wire stuff. but since this has a pressure switch to shut off the compressor i had to.

so everyones leaning towards a bad relay?
That would definately be my guess. When the ignition switch is turned off, the UF switch will immediately be disconnected from the battery. So, with that, the relay should disconnect also, but if it is sticking in the closed ( on)position, it will still supply power to the compressor.
