So...I am just about at my end with this. I am wondering if you guys may have any ideas that I can take to another dealer.
I have a 2005 XLT V10 with 185K that had a complete brake job (front and rear) about 9 months ago. About 1 month ago I started to smell burning from the rear (even smoking at times) on both sides brakes. After taking it in, the mechanic switched out the rotors and pads and said the calipers were ok. However, he suggested that I take it to the dealer as he believed there was an issue with either the master cylinder or the ABS module as he thought the rear brakes were either not disengaging completely or they were receiving too much of the force to stop the truck and causing the issue.
Fast forward to the dealer. After I explained the above scenario to the dealer, they changed out the rear driver's side caliper as he said it was locked. Still no explanation as to why this was also coming from the passenger side as they could not duplicate it and it was not getting any hotter that it should be. So...I drive it home..it stinks like burning brakes from the passenger rear...I take it back the following day. Still after driving it (supposedly) they cannot duplicate the issue. Needless to say, it is still occurring.
So where do I go now? I am not really in the mood to spend money on an exploratory brake fix without knowing that it is the cause.
It`s possible you have a brake hose that is collapsed! I have done a few of these in the past years. all of them were on higher mileage vehicles. the ones I have done have a bracket that is crimped around the brake hose to hold it in place, well the metal starts to rust and the rust expands and squeezes the brake hose shut. this keeps pressure in the calipers when the brake pedal is released. this may be your problem. this is only an educated guess based on past experiences. I don`t have your truck physically in my hands so I can`t guarantee that will fix it!
Mine had these exact symptoms except on the front left. I did a caliper replacement then a caliper rebuild. Third time I changed the hose and problem solved. May not be your issue, but it's probably worth a shot.
Had a very similar issue on my F350 & it turned out to be the hoses. Over time they swell & collapse internally not allowing the calipers to release. I would definitely consider changing them for the minimal investment. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> I went with stainless steel, Kevlar reinforced with a Teflon inner core from Crown Performance.<o></o> An added benefit was a firmer pedal do to expansion in the lines.<o></o> I would check them out, they were incredible to deal with; the product, customer service & pricing was great
