My rear calipers heating up while towing, so I replaced them. Thought they may be sticking. Now that I have new calipers on cant get a firm pedal after a dozen pump, hold, bleed trys! Do I need a scan tool to get air out? Whats the secret? ( searched brake bleeding, but this defies logic) Took calipers off, the lines sat open all night before I installed new ones, is it just air???
You have two people while bleeding the brakes, one to pump and hold while the other opens the bleed fitting, right? Sorry to ask a question so basic, but you didn't specifically say you did it that way . . .
On top of having two people you left the line unhooked all night..... Always start with the caliper the furthest away from the brake booster then go to the next closest one.
So obviously you'll want to start at the passenger rear then move to the driver rear. I do the fronts just to get rid of the old fluid up there too. Then passengers side front and lastly yhe drivers side front.
That's all there is to it aside from stopping just before the fluid stops shooting out. Repeat the process until it's under pressure and you don't see any more air.
Make sure both bleeders are at the top. It's common to get caliper that is marked wrong. If the bleeder is at the bottom you can bleed it till till your dizzy and frustrated and never get a pedal.
I went thru this not long ago even while trying with a Mityvac I could not get a pedal. If one caliper has a bleeder on the bottom just remove the caliper, flip it over and bleed it with a piece of wood acting as the rotor disc, or Mityvac it.
Try not to pump a dozen times,it can sometimes contribute air bubbles, two or three slower pumps should due.If the fluid in the master cylinder get foamed up then let it sit or remove fluid & start over.
i fill the master cylinder up, and crack the bleeder loose with a piece of clear hose on it going into a catch jar letting it gravity bleed. once air bubbles stop, close the bleeder and they are good to go.
