Cam sync squeal of death

I have a y2k 3.0 ffv w/91,000 mi. Ranger and yesterday and today when I started the truck I got a squeal that lasted a min or so when cold and then disappeared, I think it's the cam sync and I will take it in to have it replaced because it's too cold to work in my driveway. What's a fair price with Motorcraft parts? The shop labor rate is $105/hr, I'm guessing $500.

First make sure that it's the cam sycn that's squealing. It's been pretty cold this winter and that can take a toll on engine components, especially those with pulleys.

I replaced mine (98 Ranger 3.0) at 247,000 miles. It wasn't a bad job at all. Two of us had it done in under an hour. I got a kit at the local Car Quest store for under $80.00 that included a new shaft, an alignment tool and a new cam sensor. The dealer wanted over $150.00 just for the shaft. That was 3,000 miles ago and its running great. Just remember that the cam synchronizer shaft also drives your oil pump so I wouldn't run it very much until it is repaired. Also, like Rockledge says, any accessory with a pulley and a bearing can make the same sound. The noise in my truck was coming from the back of the engine.

^+2, with your stethoscope listen to under hood accessory pully bearings, or a squeeky belt for the noise as Rockledge suggested. If you determine that the under hood squeek is likely the cam sensor/sync assy, located passenger side firewall end high up on the engine as Dan suggested, which are common parts on the 3.0L Vulcan engine & is in need of replacement & you want to turn your own wrenches, from our "Tech Info" thread a link to 3.0L specific info Rockledge has put together, that has a Lot of helpful Vulcan wrench turning suggestions, so scroll down there to find how to correctly install & align the 3.0L cam sensor & or cam sync assy & let us know how it goes. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-and-tips.html
