Engine Squeak
Does the 97 3.0L have the cam position sensor in it?
I have a belt like squeak coming from the engine, but it's not the belt. It does it even with the belt disconnected.
I have read the other threads on these forums and found the ones on the Ranger and Taurus 3.0's cam position sensors squeaking as they are dying.
The mileage is 124,000. About where the ones in the other threads were.
Just got back from a 1200 mile trip, at a pretty constant 75-80 mph without missing a beat. The day after we got back we got in it to go away and it howled like the alternator was locked up, for about 10 seconds, then it went away, now it chirps at idle, and goes away at about 1500 rpm. Read the thread about backfiring through the intake. Now it squeaks and backfires.
As long as I don't make it accellerate faster than it wants to, it will work it's way up to speed and stay there quite happily.I think I have the backfire figured out, I just need the time to finish troubleshooting it to eliminate a wiring problem before I go spending money on expensive parts.
Anyway, does the motor in my 97 have a cam position sensor in it that will squeak as it dies?
Thanks for the time
Steve
never have heard one "chirping"
use a section of garden hose as stethascope to listen to different parts of engine to pinpoint "chirp" location
since you have a newer OBDII system, put it on an OBDII scanner and monitor timing and cam shaft sensor signal at steady 1.5k rpm for any intermittent changes
cam position sensor requires special installation alignment tool, some parts stores carry a loaner or buy one
also pull OBDII codes from PCM....camshaft sensor failing oftens sets a code...
read both KOEO & KOER
don't drive until backfiring problem solved....can break or bend crankshaft, rod or wristpin
