Question 2.3L to 2.5L engine swap?

I have a 1992 Ranger 4x2 stick shift with the 2.3L engine. With high miles the engine is using some oil, has some intermittent ignition problems, and may have a very small leak in the head gasket. A nearby salvage yard has a 2.5L from a 2000 Ranger that sounds reasonable. I was wondering if I could use the 2.5L to replace my old 2.3L? I would really only want to use the block and head if possible. I have read the ignition control was moved off the engine to the computer in the 2000, but would it function correctly if I use the DIS from the 92? Do I need to use the CPS on the 2.5L? Any other possible prohibitive differences? Lots of questions I know but I am just looking for a cheap and easy way to get a better running engine and maybe gain a small increase in horsepower.

Some thoughts

When I had my '91 Ranger, I often thought of doing this. In some ways, this should be fairly straight forward. Engine mounts, cooling system, alternator, fuel system, air intake, power steering pump and clutch/transmission should be a direct swap. Where it gets complicated is with the ignition system and engine electronics. My guess is that the wiring harness, ignition system and ECM - the electronic stuff - would have to be swapped from the donor truck to yours. Those are the concerns I have about making the swap.

Hopefully other folks will respond who have investigated this swap more thoroughly or who have actually made the swap.

Good luck.
